Thumbs up Movie Reviews: "Haywire"

Movie Reviews: Haywire

Critics have by and large concluded that Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire has put a new wrinkle on the action flick, thanks mainly to the performance of Gina Carano.

Betsy Sharkey remarks in the Los Angeles Times:

“Watching Carano kick, spin, flip, choke, crack and crush the fiercest of foes … is thoroughly entertaining, highly amusing and frankly somewhat awe-inspiring.”

Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal suggests that Carano’s character be viewed as:

“a fighting machine, one that registers ambient danger with all the efficiency of The Terminator and the light irony of James Bond, but also as a beautifully seductive construction at the center of a film that is itself an elegant machine.

There’s no deeper meaning to Steven Soderbergh’s thriller than what meets the eye, yet its lustrous surfaces offer great and guilt-free pleasure.”

Anne Hornaday in the Washington Post says:

“Carano is not a great actress, but she doesn’t need to be in a movie that … doesn’t get bogged down in psychology. … Instead, Haywire simply gives audiences what they came to see: bruising fight sequences set up and executed with economy, skill and one or two genuine jaw-dropping jolts.”

But Carano leaves Rex Reed of the New York Observer cold, writing that she has “all the charisma of a Sherman tank.”

As for the movie itself, it’s “nothing more than a locker-room joke. Nothing resembling plot, character development or a star-making career move of any kind is anywhere apparent.

The whole point of this time-wasting farrago of idiocy is that women can cut, kick, slash, burn, maim and kill just like men — and make bad movies that are just as stupid.”

I might see this next weekend if it doesn't snow or the weekend after that. Who's the woman that's the star and she's kicking ass? I've never seen her before. Good to see Michael Douglas is doing alright because i thought he might die because of his cancer problem. I see Channing Tatum is also in this. Channing has been busy lately. I saw previews for his new movie 21 Jump Street which i guess is supposed to be a remake of the tv show that had Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco. Rapper Ice Cube is also gonna be in 21 Jump Street. I bet Johnny and Richard probably laughed when they saw the previews because it looks wack LOL. I never watched the tv show but i heard it was good. You ever watch the tv show JamesG? I'm gonna have to check it out on dvd. Who's the white fat guy in 21 Jump Street that's gonna be Channing's partner? I've seen him before in Superbad and he was in the recent movie Moneyball with Brad Pitt. He's corny.

Channing Tatum is also gonna be in the new straight to video movie The Son Of No One with Al Pacino, Ray Liotta, Katie Holmes. It comes out on video next month and i wanna see it. It's a action flick. I love Channing and Terrence Howard's Fighting movie. Have you seen that JamesG? I got it on dvd. I also like the hot hispanic woman that Channing messes with.

Gina Carano is a star in women's MMA. Her background is in Muay Thai, which is a real bitch to learn.

I can't wait to see her in this.

This is her first mainstream release. She appeared on "American Gladiators" and Oxygen's "Fight Girls".

She also appeared in the Michael Jai White movie Blood and Bone.

I haven't watched "21 Jump Street" in years.

That's Jonah Hill.

I saw Fighting and it was alright.

There was another martial arts film released the year before that I enjoyed much better, Never Back Down.

I haven't seen it, but I know that Michael Jai White did a direct-to-DVD sequel.

I don't remember that woman in Blood And Bone. I like that movie. I haven't seen Never Back Down 1 and 2. What's the african guy's name that was in the first Never Back Down? He was in Amistad and Blood Diamond movies. I saw a action flick he did with Kevin Bacon last year called Elephant White and it was alright. I like Michael Jai White. I watched him last night in Exit Wounds with Steven Seagal. He's wasting his time now playing on Tyler Perry's new tv show For Better Or For Worse. I don't think that show is gonna last long.

She had a small role as one of the "female fighters" so she wouldn't be standing out too much.

I like him too. He's a great martial artist.
