After watching some third season episodes of "That Girl" on MeTV, and finally getting the 3rd season box set, I noticed that those episodes ended on a freeze-frame, something which a lot of police dramas used to do, and "Police Squad" used to make fun of mercilessly. So, as you can tell by the title of this page, I'd like to know which television show was the first to end their episodes on a freeze-frame.

i can remember that a bunch of shows did it in the early and late 70's, no idea who was first though
i like it when they do the "false freezeframe" - sometimes Craig Ferguson does it, they pretend its a freeze frame and try not to move as the credits roll (often trying not to laugh also) |

Dobie Gillis (also on Me-TV) uses a lot of freeze-frames during the program, but I'm not sure if it ever ended with one? I'll look for it next time I watching the show.

F-Troop latched onto that technique in its second season. That's the earliest use in a sitcom that I know of.

I Dream of Jeannie started using freeze frames at the beginning of each show when it went to color, until the end of the run.

I know the Fresh Prince ended their episodes with freeze frames, right before the credits popped up.
I know some other shows did as well, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. |

Our House and NCIS have freeze-frames after each segment.

The only shows that I know of that come to mind are:
Some of Stephen J. Cannell's shows, often did this. The A-Team, HUNTER, in particular. CHiPs, was one of the 1st cop shows that I've seen use this technique all the time. Sometimes Family Matters did this in some of its early seasons. Knight Rider did this most of the time, just they did a zoom-out transition of the still shot before they showed a show of Kitt going into commercial. |

Yes, the color episodes of F Troop and I Dream Of Jeannie utilize freeze frames instead of the traditional fade out. I never did care for that freeze frame technique, I've always thought it looks dorky.
