The 25 Films Accepted into The National Film Registry (2011)
National Film Registry Unveils 2011 Selections
By Breeanna Hare, CNN December 28, 2011 Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who chose 2011's titles, adds in the statement that "these films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture. Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams." The registry goes on to explain that the films selected made the cut because they've been deemed as "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." Out of the 2,228 films that were nominated to be included in this year's round-up, here are the 25 that made it: 1. The Cry of the Children (1912) 2. A Cure for Pokeritis (1912) 3. The Kid (1921) 4. The Iron Horse (1924) 5. Twentieth Century (1934) 6. Nicholas Brothers Family Home Movies (1930s-40s) 7. Bambi (1942) 8. The Negro Soldier (1944) 9. The Lost Weekend (1945) 10. Members of the public nominate the films to be considered and The Librarian of Congress, currently James H. Billington, solely picks 25 films each year from the 1,000s of nominees. He decides if the films meet the "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" criteria. The films that are considered are: - Silent Films - News Reel Footage - Short Films - Serials - Home Video Footage - Documentaries - Mainstream and Independent Films (theatrical release is not required) - Experimental Films - Animated Films and Shorts - Made-for-TV Films - Music Videos |

Stand and Deliver and El Mariachi should also be widely known as they are the more recent ones on this list. |
