Default Jean Stapleton

Well, this one surprised me! I was watching the episode where The Wilsons get a housekeeper. It turns out the housekeeper is played by Jean Stapleton. This would be about a decade before All in the Family. I've never seen Jean in any role before Edith Bunker. This was sure a different character!

If I recall this episode correctly, she played a rude housekeeper and tried to take over the household, and was always giving Mr. Wilson a hard time. Jean Stapleton was also in a Patty Duke Show episode, I forget which episode it is at this time. A good character actress who found her signature role as Edith Bunker in All In The Family.

Season 3, Disc 3 Episode 23, Mr. Wilson's Housekeeper, and YES, a must see!!!

I have all of The Patty Duke Show, I'll have to look for her on that show.

Anyway I'm so used to seeing your Maudie Prickets.... Elvera Allmans....Irene Tedrows, and was so surprised when I realized this was Jean Stapleton!

I'm dying to see anything Jean was in. She's a WONDERFUL actress and can do it all. I'm keeping my eye out for this ep - she can do no wrong. Love love love her.

Default Edith "Dingbat" Bunker on DTM

I saw the episode as well, & I knew it was her immediately! She really is an accomplished actress at this stage in her career, & I can see why she was chosen to do AITF as Edith Bunker. What a range of different character acting she had!

BTW did anyone see the episode with Mel Blanc "Th Th Th Th That's all Folk's" as the dogcatcher? I knew that was him when I heard his voice!

That she was The Patty Duke Show is not that suprising as that show was filmed in New York City for several seasons and Ms. Stapleton was a Broadway actress. She appeared in the original cast of Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand and Sydney Chaplin.

I did not know that she had been on Dennie the Menace, which was filmed in California.

Notice the similarities in this episode of (DTM ep23 S3)"Mr. Wilson's Housekeeper" with "Edith's Problem" (S2 AITF) especially when she is yelling at Mr. Wilson about the cleaning his hands with the powder room towels, it is almost identical to when she is bawling at Archie at the beginning of "Edith's Problem" (S2 AITF)!
