I'm hoping to work on a film script next semester and there's a detective in the script.

But I ask...is there a difference between a detective and a spy?

Detectives are investigators, private or law enforcement, whose main objective is solving crimes.

Spying involves obtaining information without the permission of the holder. They can be private or government employed.

Sometimes spying can be part of a detective's assignment, but they are different careers entirely.
