The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time Is.............Jimi Hendrix (Rolling Stone)
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/li...rists-20111123
Self taught and genre-bending, Jimi Hendrix defined rock & roll. With a legacy that lives on nearly half a century after his death, it comes as no surprise that Rolling Stone has named him the Greatest Guitarist of All Time. In a new list revealed on Wednesday, Hendrix topped a field of legendary axe-wielders, retaining the title he earned from the magazine in 2003. The Woodstock headliner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed in a number of bands, including the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and pioneered the use of feedback and distortion. That revolution is one of many things that Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello highlights in his short writeup for Hendrix in the magazine. "He seamlessly weaves chords and single-note runs together and uses chord voicings that don't appear in any music book. His riffs were a pre-metal funk bulldozer, and his lead lines were an electric LSD trip down to the crossroads, where he pimp-slapped the devil," Morello writes. Following Hendrix on the list at number two is Eric Clapton, with Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Jeff Beck making up the rest of the magazine's top five guitarists, as chosen by a panel of experts. B. B. King, Chuck Berry, Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman and Pete Townshend round out the top ten.

i don't have time to go through the whole list (why can't they jest give you the whole list on one page instead of making you click through each one?) but that list is HORRIBLE.
missing from the list are Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Al DiMeola and Ace Frehley (and others), too many GREAT guitarists are WAY too low on the list compared to guys that really don't even belong on there - I love Kurt Cobain, he was a great songwriter but a pretty crappy guitar player. someone needs to find a one-page of that whole list. |

I wouldn't expect them (or anyone) to have chosen someone else.

Did Ace Frehley once say "If I had known I was going to be influential I would have practiced more"

THis is one time I agree with Rolling Stone. Jimi Hendrix was way ahead of his time. Even on his best knows tunes, his guitar work still amazes me. We will never see a musician like that again.

I give the nod for adding James Marshall Hendrix, but I can't believe Robin Trower has been snubbed off that list again! Has Rolling Stone Magazine EVER heard these guitar-laden songs by Trower?...

I have always hated RS's top 100 list of whatever, I usually never agree with alot of it. First of all, Paul Simon, Springsteen, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain, and The Edge should not be on there. Weird, because I like Paul, Bruce and U2, I just don't think they're GREAT guitarists.
Then there's James Hetfield, but not Kirk Hammett?? WTH?? And like Robyrob posted - No Vai?? No Satriani?? No DiMeola?? No Paul Gilbert?? Guitarists who were way too far down on the list - Alex Lifeson at 98, Dimebag Darrell at 92, James Hetfield at 87(and no Hammett Jheesh!!), Joe Perry at 84, Slash at 65, and Randy Rhoads at 36(I'm thinking of how high on the list he would be today if he were still alive). The 3 I was really happy to see and they were at a decent spot - Brian May, Angus Young, and Frank Zappa. |

I liked the list overall but felt that Joe Perry, Alex Lifeson and Slash were ranked way too low.
