Question Do You Think 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' Would Still Be A Hit If Mary Wasn't On TDVDS

If Mary never starred on The Dick Van Dyke Show as Laura Petrie, do you think Mary's show would still be a success? Would it even have existed?

No, I don't think The Mary Tyler Moore Show would even exist if Mair wasn't in The Dick Van Dyke Show. That was her first BIG role and in 1969 her and Dick made a special called Dick Van Dyke and the Other Woman. The reason Mary got to do her own show is because CBS saw how great she was in the special and they offered it to her. So, if she was never in TDVDS there wouldn't have been Dick Van Dyke and the Other Woman and CBS would never have offered her her own show if they didn't see her in the special (:. So, to answer the question, it wouldn't be a hit because it wouldn't exist.
I'm sorry, I'm just going on and on, but I am the BIGGEST Mary Tyler Moore fan EVER!!

If anything I think Mary ADDED to TDVDS. I liked her more on it than I did Dick. And I thought Rose Marie was a hoot. Don't get me wrong, Dick is a fine actor but imo Mary's BETTER.

Her talent is VAST! She was dancing on the air (in a commerical) in her teens, added magnificently to TDVDS, was the centerpiece of one of the finest shows ever, and did fantastic dramatic acting (Ordinary People.) In top of all this, her work for Diabetes.

Even if one were to play Devil's Advocate and say maybe part of her success was being in the right place at the right time -- a lesser talent would not have soared the way she did.

She is awesome.

I agree with you, 100%. Mary is absolutely wonderful and she's beautiful, inside and out.

Well, of course I agree 100% w/ all the Mary love in this thread! But yeah, I don't really see TMTMS happening w/o Mary's history on TDVDS. I mean, that's where people knew her from first, and when a show is called The "Whoever" Show, it means people have to know who that person is, or they have no reason to watch! And plus Mary says she learned a lot of her comedy and such from Dick Van Dyke and Carl Reiner.
