Default Tony's Severe Depression and Jerry's Help

Not many people know this, but Tony Dow went into a severe depression and exile after Beaver ended. Making matters worse was that about two years after Beaver ended, summer of 1965, Tony was tragically involved in an auto accident in which a man darted out into the road and Tony could not stop in time, killing the pedestrian.

This incident devastated and haunted him for years, where he became isolated and withdrawn. It was something so much bigger than not being a part of Beaver anymore, but the guilt, pain and sadness that hurt Tony so much due to the accident.

The story is that after much coaxing and convincing, it was Jerry that Tony was only able to feel somewhat comfortable in talking about the incident. Several months after the accident, Jerry either called Tony, or Tony called Jerry and they went to a movie together and out to eat or something, and Jerry was able to be a good listener and Tony was able to talk about the experience for the first time to him.

So it really is to Jerry's credit, and through the magic of them working and being brothers on Beaver that "Wally" had "Beaver" to help him therapeutically through something tragic. This represents another example of how close and important these TV brothers were, able to help and listen to work problems out in dealing with a painful situation. This really helped Tony go out and start enjoying life again although through months and years of very small manageable steps. I think Jerry understood that, and gave great comfort and support to Tony at a time when he needed it most.

I had no idea that had happened to him. I'm sure he was riddled with guilt. Kudos to Jerry for helping his friend and "brother."

Jerry seemed to be a warm kind hearted man. We need more people like him. I suppose being around Jerry for many years on the show, Tony got to know him well enough to tell his feelings. Nice!

Wow I didn't know that either. Growing up in the public eye is not a normal way for kids to grow. I would think Tony and Jerry could help each other through difficult times. I wonder just how depressed Tony was and if he got therapy. Hitting someone who darts out in front of you could happen to anyone. I'm also glad that Tony got through those hard times. I know you just have to put things behind you and look ahead. Years later you can become a new person.

I know well of this situation. I knew someone who struck and killed a little girl running across the street. Not his fault and nothing he could have done about it, but it led to serious problems in life.
