I only watched a few episodes of 'Roll Out', but as service comedies go, I found it quite funny, more situational and physical in its comedy than from clever one-liners. I remember it was filmed on a really muddy set, and I vividly remember a gag sequence in the credits where one of the actors gets sprayed with mud from a stuck, spinning tire.

'Roll Out' didn't have the toughest timeslot competition, but it had an abysmal lead in ('Calucci's Dept. at 8 pm, a comedy set in a city social assistance department that I rather enjoyed, and which averaged 7.9HH). 'Roll Out' was up against 'The Odd Couple' on ABC which won the Friday 8:30 pm slot with a 17.2HH, and 'The Girl With Something Extra' on NBC was just a fraction behind with a 17.1HH. 'Roll Out' on CBS never really got any traction in the slot, and finished its half-season with a 12.9HH, ahead of 'Calucci's Dept.', but too far behind the competition for CBS's liking. In February 1974, 'Roll Out' was replaced by 'Good Times', which was an instant time-period hit with a 21.4HH.

I've said elsewhere that I wouldn't mind watching 'Roll Out' again on DVD as it was created by the legendary writing team of Mr. Larry Gelbart and Mr. Gene Reynolds.

yea, I'd also like to see it on DVD (hint, hint, "SHOUT") because as I recall it WAS pretty funny. I remember that and "MASH" were my 2 favorite shows at the time.

But it was written by Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds huh? I never knew that!

It may sell if Broke Girls on CBS with Garrett Morris becomes a success.

why, Sol? Was Garret Morris also in the cast? I remember a black comedian named Stu Gilliam was.

I remember seeing a couple of episodes on TVLand in the late 1990s.It was not bad.It is a little bit like a black version of MASH.Not nearly as good as MASH of course but worth viewing.

About "Roll Out!",do you think if it were moved to another time slot instead of being cancelled by CBS at midseason,it would have been a hit?It WAS promising,and if moved to a much stronger time slot,it would I think have been a hit.But that we'll never know.

The show was up against heavy competition so that's probably why it was cancelled.

Its a Fox show, so you can forget every seeing it again. They don't even do anything with their successful shows.

Supposedly, this show was loosely-based on a 1952 film called Red Ball Express. That's odd, because the film was produced and released by Universal Pictures, and many TV shows produced by Fox over the years were based on films that Fox produced and released themselves (such as My Friend Flicka, Broken Arrow, How to Marry a Millionaire, Five Fingers, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Peyton Place, Twelve O'Clock High, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, Anna and the King, The Paper Chase, 9 to 5, Mr. Belvedere and of course, M*A*S*H).
