Movie Reviews: Puss in Boots
DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots is garnering the kind of reviews ordinarily reserved for films displaying the Pixar label. Among the country’s leading newspaper critics, only one, Lou Lumenick of the New York Post, has given it a negative review. “It's a relentlessly mediocre cartoon … punctuated by more puns and cat jokes than you can shake a litter box at. Mostly I was bored out of my skull for an hour and a half that felt like it consumed an entire afternoon. Most of the kids at the screening I attended also seemed to have fallen into a stupor. … There was more entertainment in five minutes of Paramount’s non-dwa Rango than in the entire running time of this mangy stiff.” Michael O’Sullivan in the Washington Post calls it: “almost shockingly good. And not just because a lot of you will approach it with lowered expectations.” Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times calls it: “a family film where the adventure and invention never flag and the tongue-in-cheek humor doesn’t linger far behind.” Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News remarks that: “it’s always a pleasure to find a family film that respects its audience all the way up the line. While kids will have a blast, it’s the adults … who’ll wind up happy as a cat in cream.” Stephen Holden in the New York Times adds: “It also looks terrific: brighter, with a lot more visual pizzazz than the Shrek films. Even when the story loses its thread, the movie rewards your eye.” Ty Burr in the Boston Globe one-ups that appraisal. “Visually, Puss is close to rapture.” -IMDB News |
