Default The Mary Tyler Moore Show or...

Mary Tyler Moore? What is the show really called? I've seen it called both many times and in the TV Land to Go book it specifically says that it is called "Mary Tyler Moore" and that the producers and Mary wanted it like that because they didn't want to make it seem like it was just about her, but an ensemble show. I would think that the show is called just "Mary tyler Moore" after reading that but most everywhere I see it's called "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", even on TV Land's website and this website. Oh well.

The official title really is just "Mary Tyler Moore", and it's always listed this way in the opening credits, never with "Show". It's definitely unusual, since most shows named after stars have "The" and "Show", which is why many people still (incorrectly) refer to this as "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". BTW, I've only seen this once before, when Ann Jillian had a show titled "Ann Jillian" without "Show".

I often go to mtmshow.com, and I emailed the webmaster there about this issue a few weeks ago. He said he'd never heard it referred to as just "Mary Tyler Moore." Still, that is what it says in the credits.

Yeah, I was gonna post this lol. I've always heard it be called "the Mary Tyer Moore Show"...I've always wondered about this, because Mary was never credited in the beginning, and then if that opening said the star, then the show wouldn't have a name. LOL Confusing

I was wondering about this after seeing it called "THE Mary Tyler Moore SHOW" here. I've never heard it called with "The...show" around it. I even think it looks funny.

Well, I guess I will have to do a search and replace for "Mary Tyler Moore" and rename the board and everything.

The credits alone would not lead me to believe the one and only official title of the show was 'Mary Tyler Moore' though.

Even though I know it's called "Mary Tyler Moore", I'd still add "The" and "Show" part when talking to people. I mean, it can confuse them lol!
Man #01: "Hey, did you see Gavin MacLeod in Mary Tyler Moore?"
Man #02: "How in the world did another human get into Mary Tyler Moore?"
Man #01: "Mary Tyler Moore as in the show"
Man #02: "I still don't get it"

LOL

According to imdb.com the name of the show is The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Then I hopped over to amazon.com and the packaged video sets that they sell have "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" on the front. I'll try to attach a picture of the videos to the end of this.

I haven't read the TV Land book, but I have never heard anything about the name being just "Mary Tyler Moore". I would think that whoever is packaging the videos would check to make sure they have the right name.

Another place to check would be in a TV Guide from the 70s. I don't have a TV Guide from that time, so I can't check. It seems that the TV Guide would list it however the TV station told them.

Exactly!! I think that's the main reason you most often hear "The....Show" instead of just "Mary Tyler Moore" since Mary's a person! LOL Personally, I've always called it "the....show".
