In the first few weeks of September, I got the chance to see my second taping of The Facts of Life--this time it was the actual taping and not just the dress rehersal--this one for "A Thousand Frowns" episode. In the hours before the doors opened up, I sat outside the studio and wrote some of the bleakest verses I ahad ever written at that point, such as one entitled "Big Boys Don't Cry," which touched on images of my abusive past coupled with
references to Christ as a "brutal" parent-figure. I felt a relief in writing such things, as if I had previously been prevented. So soon we went in and for the next several hours I was once again transported to that time beyond time and space beyond reality--the Facts set--far away from my present concerns and pains. This was the episode where Rick tells the girls he'll die by his30th birthday. After so many days of stressing, it felt good to laugh and forget about the "real" world. It was funny to see Andy brag about the reckless stunts he did with Rick before he slaps heis hand over Andy's mouth! I also Natalie in her typical fashiion asking Rick, "how long do you have until you, pardon the expression--CROAK?" And also where Blair and Caseywere standing by the door making the comment about how "in the movies when Spencer Tracy and Kathryn Hepburn looked into each others' eyes and you knew all they wanted to do was make love"--and a few seconds before they were about to get into some serious face-sucking, Jo cuts in and spoils the moment. And I thought, can you actually say words like "make love" to Lisa/Blair?? I thought her little pristine virgin ears couldn't handle it! She's a CHRISTIAN, that line of dialogue was very insensitive to her beliefs, I thought. And when the girls sat discussing what they would do if they had one day left to live, Jo says to Blair, "I know what you'd do, you'd liquefy all your assets into cash and roll around naked in it." And Blair says, "No, I wouldn't! I do that now." I saw them say that in only one airing of that episode, but in later airings, they omitted that dialogue. Is it because they didn't want to give people ideas of Blair/Lisa rolling around naked in her money?? Hmmmmm...
