Giuliana Rancic said Monday that she has breast cancer, RadarOnline.com is reporting.
The popular E! News and Style Network host, 36, told Today’s Ann Curry that she’s in the early stages of the disease. Rancic -- who’s married to former Apprentice winner Bill Rancic -- said doctors discovered the tumor during a mammogram while she was undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization in an effort to get pregnant. She says her doctor insisted she undergo a mammogram even though she’s only 36 because the surge of hormones during pregnancy can accelerate cancer. Rancic says she’ll undergo surgery this week and then have six weeks of radiation therapy. Rancic said doctors gave her a good prognosis on her chances of beating the deadly disease, and that her husband Bill has been "unbelievable" in staying by her side throughout the tough times. "The best thing about Bill is, he lets me cry when I want to cry," Rancic said. Rancic added she "still [wants] this baby ... because this baby has saved my life. I truly feel God was looking out after me … If I had gotten pregnant later down the line, I could have been a lot sicker." http://www.radaronline.com/exclusive...-breast-cancer |

Wow, that's awful. I like her so much. She and her husband Bill are adorable together. It sounds like they caught it in time. The article is poorly written. What surgery is she having? Unless they meant to write mascectomy instead of mammogram. Also, is she pregnant? It states that they're trying to get pregnant, then Giuliana says that this baby saved her life. Prayers to her for a fast and complete recovery.

Giuliana Rancic to Undergo Double Mastectomy for Breast Cancer
Dec 5, 2011 by Robyn Ross Giuliana and Bill Rancic appeared on "TODAY" on Monday and Giuliana revealed her new treatment plan: Two months ago we know that you had lumpectomies, but now there's a new decision that you had to make about your treatment. What is your decision? Guiliana: The last time I was here I told you that I was getting the double lumpectomy and radiation, but now instead of radiation I'm going to move forward to a double mastectomy. Bill: We were going to the doctor hoping for some good news and unfortunately the one breast they weren't able to clear and get all of the cancer out. So now we were faced with a new decision, do we go back and try to clean it out or do we go for more radical procedures? This is a very dramatic and drastic decision, to what degree does wanting to have children play into your decision to go forward with the double mastectomy? Giuliana: Actually it was a big part of it, not all of it, but a big part. If I had chosen to do another lumpectomy, and then another round of radiation and then do anti-estrogen therapy, which is five years of medication, that basically puts me into early menopause and I would have to put off having a baby for several years. So that was something that we took into account, but to be honest at the end it all came down to just choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life. That's what it came down to. Bill: This was a decision that wasn't made lightly, I mean we talked to as many experts as we could, looked at all of the information that was made available to us and one of the other factors that came into play was quality of life. If she went ahead with the lumpectomy and radiation she would have to in for treatment every 6 months for the rest of her life and then go in for mammograms. Knowing Giuliana she would be worried three weeks before going in for the mammogram every time, and then she would be worried waiting around for the results. This would be constantly looking over your shoulder and I think that in this case that this was the best option for Giuliana. Giuliana: It also could have come back more aggressively the next time, so for me it was very important to just get the cancer out. What did the doctors tell you about not ever getting it back? Giuliana: With the double mastectomy I have a 1% chance of it ever coming back. With the other lumpectomy and radiation I could see a 20% to 30% to 40% chance in my lifetime, and for me it just wasn't worth it. Like we said, this was a very hard decision to make and in the end Bill said to me "I just need you around for the next fifty years kid." That really got to me with "I don't care what you look like, what physical condition you are in, I just need you around for the next fifty years and let's just get you healthy." This all certainly helped with my decision. Beyond that, what do you want to say about how important Bill has been through all of this? Having a supportive spouse can be very powerful for your physical and mental well-being. Giuliana: Bill has been the world to me through all of it, and I couldn't have done it without him. He reminded me of who we are as a couple and that none of this will break us apart or tear us down. I couldn't be more at peace with this decision, but it was hard and I still break down some nights when it's quiet in bed. It's very easy to just start crying and be sad, but I'm ok. I know from my own family experience that it's also hard for the spouse. What is getting you through this Bill? Bill: I am just focused on the 'finish line' and that our goal is to be done with this by Christmas time and we will never look back. My role was to make sure that she had the best information available so that she could make the right decision. The main message through all of it is that there is no right or wrong answer and that it's all a personal decision. Giuliana: Also for me it was very important to actually see it. When I was first told that a mastectomy was an option I said "Absolutely not! I'm 37 and I just don't want it!" To me that word was very scary and it meant "being disfigured". A very good friend of mine had a mastectomy in her early 20s and she was very wonderful to share, and show, her experiences with me. I saw how beautiful, vibrant and healthy she was and I now thought that this is ok. It's very important that women share their experiences with others because it certainly helped me with my decision. It was wonderful for me to see a woman around the same age as me who has been through this. http://www.tvguide.com/News/Giuliana...y-1040447.aspx |
