I know that it is not a spin-off or a continuation series of some kind, but you are saying that Archie Bunker or say George Jefferson couldn't appear on this show? |

I don't think "One Day.." ever mentioned characters on other Norman Lear shows.

That would have been neat. I guess they could have been related. A fight between Ann and Archie would have been spectacular to see!! But then again, I think they would have agreed on some things. Ann had a few old-fashioned ways about her so she and Archie might have seen eye-to-eye on occasion. Ann and Edith would have gotten along because anyone could get along with Edith. Ann would have gotten along okay with Mike and Gloria, but I think especially Mike would have been too liberal for her tastes.
I think Ann and James Evans would have gotten along well, as would Ann and Florida. Both wanted the best for their children, and both worked hard. Ann, even as a single mother, was in a better financial position than the Evans though. The Coopers lived a lot better even though they had to worry about money too. The Evans wouldn't have liked Ann being divorced, but they would have come to like her and Ed also because Ann and Ed were good parents even as separate parents. Julie and Barbara would have been friends with J.J., Thelma, and Michael. I think Maude would have been a little too liberal and extreme for Ann, but they would have gotten along okay. |

Norman Lear did not create "One Day at a Time" the way he created "All in the Family," "Maude," "The Jeffersons" or "Good Times."
"One Day at a Time" was created by Whitney Blake (yes, Dorothy "Missy" Baxter of "Hazel" and her then-husband, Allen Manings). It is supposedly based on Blake's experiences during her "Hazel" days, including her divorce from Tom Baxter (the father of Meredith Baxter[-Birney]). However, the subject of a divorced woman living her live "one day at a time" as a single mother was just controversial enough for Lear to bite--in 1977). You may remember that in 1970, Mary Richards of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was originally supposed to be a divorcee, but it was too risque and controversial for its day. |
