Have You Ever Given Up A Passion? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

For whatever reason, economics, decreased interest, lack of anyone to discuss it with...?

I was thinking about this the other day, and wondered if anyone else ever abandoned something they'd loved in terms of entertainment, for whatever reason.

For me, two things come to mind. One is comic books. I love them and have been collecting since I was quite young. I still do, but as prices rise dramatically I foresee the day I will have to give them up. A "cheap" monthly comic now costs $2.99 per issue, and I've resolved not to go beyond that. Some titles are at $3.99, and my guess is that someday they all will be. On that day, I'm out. I can no longer justify 20 minutes of entertainment value for $4 a pop. I just can't.

Sports is another. I loved sports avidly as a kid/young adult, but my interest has waned a lot since. I think that's a case where since I wasn't playing them anymore (never got past high school sports), I just kind of "moved on" in my mind. I can still watch a ball game and be entertained, and I follow them to a degree, but the passion that I once had isn't there like it was.

Anybody else?

I collect tv guides. I have been doing it since 1983. It's not the same anymore. I get them delivered to my door but half the time I don't even look at them. They aren't the same anymore. I collect them more out of habit. Plus when I started they were 60 cents an issue...now they're $3.99.

I also don't follow sports like I once did,just lost interest I guess.
I don't work on as many old cars and trucks anymore, Lack of space is the reason for that.

Recentely the NBA season was cancelled because of some selfish players demands for more then their atleast 5 million dollars a year. So yeah, lost a passion, but not by choice. As a result, i'm going to miss fantasy basketball season for the second year in a row. Before i missed it because my computer was down, but now i'm glad the seasons over.

If the players get more money, making absurd ticket prices even higher, i'll probably ban fb for next season too, and possibly permanentely. About 70% percent of the teams are already in debt, if ya'll players get your wish, the NBA will be gone permanantely within 10 years most likely. What geniuses you all are!! Sounds like reason and logic ain't too high on their list of life goals.

For health reasons, I've had to give up many of my passions. I loved to cook and entertain in a big way, but that's a fond memory now. Shopping is another one. I shop more online now.

Over the years as my vision has worsened I no longer can read extensively ie: novels, etc. in print. Years ago I used to buy large print books and read them. I would usually get so interested in the book that I would push myself to keep reading which unfortunately puts strain on the eyes. Prolonged reading also seems to cause me neck pain so I try to avoid that. I'm not sure the reason for the neck pain.
Thank goodness for audiobooks.

I gave up TV many years ago. I just can stomach commercials, canned laughter and applause, reporters' shrill voices, the flashy fluff just irritates me.
I like a good book or a good movie, a good play on occasion. But I still like the site b/c i do have fond memories of a few shows from yesteryear which made me laugh, and of course crime shows which can be good and a few seen online. I am a true crime buff.

On another, non-entertainment note i have had to give up running, b/c of a pretty serious injury to my Achilles tendon. I have dreams that i'm running and wake up and realize I can't, which is depressing. some days even walking is a challenge, but i'm hanging in there and getting creative with what exercises I can do, for now.

i can so relate with this. In the last two and a half years, the only tv i have watched has been ESPN. Other than that, i usually would just have it on for background noise. i was oblivious to what was being said.

Haven't watched any tv at all in the last month or so, for many of the reasons you stated, and because i'm quite content with youtube, hulu, and other video sites where you can watch what you want, where you want, when you want, without commercials.

Well, i take that back, commercials and advertisements are showing up like crazy now, but it's still not nearly as bad as tv.

When I lived in Dallas I was in the church choir at the church where my husband and I met. I absolutely loved it, but I ended up getting what I thought was a promotion at work and had to work on Thursday nights. It wasn't a promotion at all; just a full time position in the dept I was already working in. To this day I wish I would have kept working my regular schedule because I still regret having to give up singing for a job in a department that didn't work out anyway. I ended up being transfered to a department that I hated after that.

I've also been forced to give up things for health reasons. I used to like to go swimming, dancing, and ride my bike. But, my condition has deterorated to the point where I can no longer do any of those things, and, sadly, there's a chance that it may worsen. (I hope not).

My physical therapist has me doing aqua-therapy right now, and it's great! It's the first time I've been in a pool in YEARS!

(and as an added bonus, the pretty therapists assistant gets in the water with me.

I guess for me it has to be professional wrestling. I'm no longer into it as much as I once was when I was younger.

Back in the day you had to pay separately for the pay-per-view events so all of the parents used to have wrestling parties at their houses. They would rotate who would have it at their house as well as paying for the event.

We did this until our circle of friends started high school.

When I reached my high school years I started attending a lot more live shows like the huge WWF events, indepedent shows, house shows (non-televised events)...

When I graduated high school and my wrestling pals from childhood went their separate ways is when things started to change. I didn't like the then-current crop of wrestlers and my interest slowly faded.

I still read up on what's going on in the current wrestling biz but I'm in no way as into it.

I used to do this a lot, but now I haven't watch a tape that I have for months.

I hope to get a DVD Recorder soon, but I would rather save the money for college.
