The theatrical release of the movie was a calculated ploy to make it appear that a mosher majon picshur was coming to TV as a weekly series. Although TV Guide played along, classifying as a "movie" the first broadcast in September 1979 one week prior to the debut of the series proper, when NBC reran the film that December it was shown in the listings of TV Guide to be merely an(other) episode of the series.

I see the film is MISTAKENLY listed as a TV movie at imdb. Gawd, can't those clods get anything right? If that's the reason this question was asked in the first place--yes, it had an actual theatrical release in late spring 1979.

i read somewhere where this person had said that he saw the theatrical plot in the movie theatures of Buck Rogers and i think that wikeenyplida had there own notes i was a bit confused because what i read that the theatrical version that was shown in the theatrures came first before the series was actually debuted i wonder what was the difference
