In the early episodes, the character was pretty nice.Towards the end, however,he became kind of tyrannical. The episode,in my opinion,in which he was REALLY mean, was in last season's very good "The Bottom of Mel Cooley's Heart".In most others,he was more frustrated than mean.Any more episodes in which the character was REALLY m,ean?

I agree that by the last season, the writers made Alan into being more of an actual antagonist than just the character's boss. It definitely allowed some interesting episodes to be made-- such as "Obnoxious, Offensive, Egomaniac, Etc." where you can really feel the tension, and "The Bottom of Mel Cooley's Heart," like you said, which even made Buddy feel sorry for Mel! I think the one that best shows Alan's anger is "Coast to Coast Bigmouth." Of course, he was funny in that one too, but I think he blew things waaay out of proportion. Laura looked like she was almost going to cry..

And anotner one in which he was not nice(but in this episode,it's somewhat understandable) is 1966's "Talk to the Snail",and even Rob admitted to Sally and Buddy:"Alan Brady is not nice."

I agree with "Coast to Coast Bigmouth"! Alan really let Laura have it after she revealed his (un)hairy secret!

yea, "Coast-to-coast big mouth" is one of the best "Alan Brady episodes". I heard Carl Riener say on "Entertainment tonight" once that it's his favorite "Alan Brady" episode and the scene where Laura's in his office and he's letting her have it is his favorite "Alan Brady scene".

I just watched the DVD commentary of "Coast to Coast Bigmouth",and all 3-Carl Reiner,Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore-said that Mary was at her best. And in the episode, the Alan Brady character got mad ,yes, but not REALLY REALLY mad like he did in "The Bottom of Mel Cooley's Heart",and was surprised somewhat when Laura came up to his office to confess,ON HER OWN,with no coercing from Rob.(At first he thought Rob DID put her up to it)-pretty gutsy.
