Sad I Never Thought This Would Happen to Me....

As I was coming home from my girlfriend's house late last night, I discovered a body off the side of the road. I came upon a wreck and most of the damage appeared to be in the rear and the door was opened so I stopped and looked inside but didn't see anyone so I thought maybe the driver walked away.

There was debris scattered everywhere and as I went back to my car, I saw two bare feet sticking out just off to the shoulder of the road. I called 911 and they asked if she was moving and I said no and they told me that someone else had called just before I did but didn't say anything about anyone lying off the side of the road. I found out later that a woman who lives across the street had called but she told me that she didn't see anyone.

The emergency crews got there about 5 minutes later and I couldn't leave until they had finished their work. I stood outside and watched for over 2 hours and a Fireman let me know that she didn't make it. A State Trooper wanted to ask me a few questions and then I had to fill out a form with my name and contact info in case they needed to get in touch with me.

After the Officer was done, I told him that I was headed home and still had about 30 miles to go. He told me that I would have to go back the opposite direction and take a detour because he had no idea how much longer they were going to be there. I said that was fine and he gave me directions since I wasn't familiar with that area but it turned out to be only 3-4 miles extra.

The area where the accident happened is very remote and at 2:00am, there's not much traffic so I was most likely the first person to run up on it. I also found out from the Fireman that there was a car seat in the back but no sign of a baby but they later found out the baby was at another home and safe. I read the preliminary Police report online this morning and it was determined that she hit an embankment and was ejected when the car flipped over several times. She was only 27.

What's the speed limit on that road ? Sounds like she was really moving.

I cannot understand why people have to be in that big of a hurry. Probably had one too many if you know what I mean.

That area is very heavily populated with deer and she could've served to avoid hitting one. You can't always assume that the driver was drunk.

When you said 2:00 am, I also first thought of drunk driving. Thats when the bars let out where I live, very dangerous time of night to be driving.

Oh man, only a year older than me. (I turned 26 in August)

How scary and sad... I feel bad for you, and for the family of that gal involved. Her baby will never get to know their mom. :/ and I realize how traumatizing it is to come across something like that. It's good you called it in when you did.

That has to effect someone, coming upon a tragic scene like that.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, Charles. Sounds like you did everything just as you should have, though, and stayed cool under pressure.

I commend you for stopping, not everyone would. It's a shame she was killed, and most likely left a child behind.

What a terrible sight to behold, Charles. I hope you can shake it, one of these days. She was so young. That late at night, she could have closed her eyes, in exhaustion. However it happened isn't really that important, I guess.
