Movie Reviews: Dolphin Tale


Several critics suggest that when acting awards are handed out this year, the star of Dolphin Tale should not be overlooked. That’s not Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, or Harry Connick Jr. but Winter the dolphin whose tale is told in this calculatedly uplifting movie.





Writes Ty Burr in the Boston Globe:

“The dolphin is, quite simply, remarkable, and the unstated message of resilience and adaptation ripples easily off the screen to the smallest viewers.”





Indeed, Bruce DeMara in the Toronto Star suggests that one of the principal problems with the movie is that there’s not enough Winter.

“It would have been nice to spend some more time with the delightful Winter, who plays herself in a story loosely based on her own experience. After all, the film is called Dolphin Tale, no?”





Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer says that she had to mop up tears at the end of the film after watching the accomplishments of the dolphin, who required a prosthetic tail after her own was hurt in a crab trap and who demonstrated to humans how they can overcome disabilities, too.

“It may not be a great movie, but it is an exceptionally touching one.”





Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests it may be the ideal family movie.

“There’s something classy about Dolphin Tale, which operates on the theory that children don’t need a flatulence joke every five minutes to keep them from rioting in the theater aisles.”
