Avatar To Become Theme Park Ride at Disney

Stock up on Unobtanium! In a move that feels almost obvious, Disney has teamed with Twentieth Century Fox to bring James Cameron's Avatar into theme parks.

"James Cameron is a groundbreaking filmmaker and gifted storyteller who shares our passion for creativity, technological innovation and delivering the best experience possible,'' Walt Disney president and CEO Robert A. Iger said in a statement.

''With this agreement, we have the extraordinary opportunity to combine James' talent and vision with the imagination and expertise of Disney.''

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013, meaning the ride could debut close to the premiere date of Avatar 2.

(The sequel is tentatively scheduled for release in December of 2014.)

No word yet on what features the ride will include, but Disney plans to build Avatar inside the Animal Kingdom portion of Disney World.

Per the press release, "Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the AVATAR stories, which share the same philosophy."

Said James Cameron: "Through this incredible partnership with Disney, we'll be able to bring Pandora to life like never before. With two new 'Avatar' films currently in development, we'll have even more locations, characters and stories to explore. I'm chomping at the bit to start work with Disney's legendary Imagineers to bring our 'Avatar' universe to life.

Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of 'Avatar' with an unprecedented sense of reality."

Disney Debuts New Preview Footage from Two Avatar Rides

Fans of Avatar are one step closer to experiencing the fantastical jungles of Pandora from the James Cameron-directed movie for themselves. Walt Disney World has unveiled new footage from two upcoming attractions based on the film’s lush environments.

The Orlando-based resort debuted a pair of videos teasing its Pandora — The World of Avatar attractions over the weekend.

The first offers a glimpse at the Na’vi River Journey.

Riders will climb aboard boat-like vehicles that will travel through Pandora’s scenery — populated by mystical flora and fauna — through heavily themed sets and winding chutes.

The second shows off computer-generated renderings lifted from the area’s major E-ticket attraction Avatar: Flight of Passage.

Park guests ride vehicles that resemble living, breathing Banshees, the bird-like aerial creatures seen in the first Avatar film in the planned series.

Pandora: The World of Avatar is set to open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on May 27th.
