![]() http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118042646?refcatid=14 The Simpsons were selected by Variety as being one of 25 shows that changed the face of TV forever. While the Simpsons certainly did their part in pop culture history, let's face it, would their be a Simpsons show if not for The Flintstones. Were the prehistoric family from Bedrock overlooked? |

I think so. Not only was The Flintstones the first animated TV sitcom, it was the first prime-time cartoon series created for adults. When Joe Barbera and Bill Hanna found out that many adults were fans of Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw McGraw, that phenomenon led to the creation of a series especially for grownups. The success of The Flintstones, with all ages, led in turn to more prime-time TV cartoon series (not only by Hanna-Barbera but other studios as well): Top Cat, The Bullwinkle Show, The Alvin Show, Calvin & the Colonel, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo (all in the sixties). In 1989,
the success of The Simpsons sparked another cartoon boom: King of the Hill, Futurama, Family Guy, etc. But let's not forget it was all started by The Flintstones, back in the fall of 1960.

I agree! The Flintstones proved that an animated program aimed at grown-ups and airing in prime time could be successful. Every prime time series that has aired since owes a debt of appreciation to Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, and their prehistoric creation!
