Default If the Evans had extra money left over why didn't they put it in the bank?

Remember in the ep "dinner party" james said they had 35 extra dollars left over and told florida to do something SILLY with the money? Why do that when you can save? James was in no position to spend money in a silly way especially when he was the only one working.

Because they rarely ever get the chance to do or say that. LOL. In their eyes, they know how to survive. I figure they wanted to celebrate that found money. LOL.

I don't think they had the chance to splurge, though. Maybe that's what he wanted to do. He could have given it to Thelma and told her to tell her date that he's "going out with a rich man's daughter" or better yet, put it to "them actin' and dancin' lessons" for Thelma. LOL.

It sounded like a george jefferson line.........."go head weezy and spend this money on something silly, i can afford it."

LOL

That's what James should have done when he had that robbery money. Instead of telling Flo he kept $2,000, he could have told her each month, "Hey baby, we have $35 extra. Go spend it on something silly." That could have gone on for 57 months.

I think when you bust your butt just to put food on the table and pay your bills, you NEED to splurge once in a while just to keep your sanity. Besides, James so himself as the sole provider for the family and I think part of that isn't just paying bills, but making sure your family is happy.

Since he was the only income in the household which was small, he should have put whatever left over money in a emergency bank account.

There would have been a limit to how much they could have in the bank, low income housing, so it wouldn't have helped them build an account.
Also, as others have stated, they rather had the opportunity to splurge.

They should have only been splurging once a year lol

The family (post James) won the lotto and put that $2500 they won in the bank so, the reason being that they lived in low-income housing as a reason for not having a bank account doesn't seem to apply. If they could put that amount in the bank, then James could have had a bank account and put money away or just put it in a shoebox for whenever a time came up when they needed money.

Also, the family tried to obtain a loan from the bank at one time post James. It was Keith, Thelma, Michael, Flo and JJ. The fact they lived in the projects and living in low-income housing didn't seem to keep them from obtaining that loan. It was fhe fact there was not one person with a full-time job was the reason they couldn't get the loan.

They should have only splurged "once a year" but when people aren't used to having extras then it's hard not to pick up a few things when they can.
It's also true that the take home money of blue collar workers is known as "disposable income" and is what keeps/kept the economy going. Wealthy people invest while working people spend money at the drugstore, movies, buying things in malls, etc.

I'd forgotten about the lottery episode. Some of it would have went for taxes but there still would have had to have been a limit to their assets to qualify for low income housing.
The loan episode was for a house out of the projects so they wouldn't have worried about being kicked out of the ghetto for that.

Willona seemed to make a pretty decent living, had a nice apartment and nice wardrobe. She was the head buyer at the boutique, receiving alimony according to her comment in one episode and yet, she was living in a low-income apartment. Why? She had no kids and she certainly didn't seem to be qualified for low-income.

As for the loan episode, each one of them was working at a part-time job so, I don't know what limits, if any, they had for living in the projects. They had to be earning quite a good sum if they were looking into buying a home where the mortgage would be equal to or more than the rent they were paying in the projects on top of property taxes and other expenses that come with owning a home. I am guessing if Willona could live there in the projects, there was no limit on what they could earn or have as assets in order to live there.
