Why are people so freaking nitpicky?! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I don't understand why people are so freaking nitpicky. I was looking at another Frasier board and one of the questions was "Did you like the series finale?"
Most people said they hated it because it was so rushed and unrealistic. The whole thing with Martin and Ronee's wedding with the cattle, how quickly Daphne gave birth, how good she looked afterwards, and how clean the birth was. They even complained about the incident with Frasier and the doctor thinking something was really wrong with him and then only to find out he was moving. The whole doctor thing had to do with his eyes and nothing life threatening.
They said the only thing they liked about it was Wendie Malick. It just made me mad!

I loved the finale. I don't feel that Daphne gave birth that quickly. It was pretty much explained when as soon as Niles said "Open bar" her water broke and then he said it again and she went into labor. We saw her go into labor and then it cuts out and then when we see them again she is holding her baby. Who knows how much time passed in between the time she went into labor and when she gave birth? It could have been half an hour. To me she did look like she just had a baby, I mean she didn't look terrible but she didn't look great either. She was still a bit sweaty from the birth and she looked tired. Not all women look the same after having a baby. Some look terrible, others don't look that bad.
With the whole how clean the birth was, not all births are messy. If you saw the baby's head, he still had after birth on him and the nurse had to clean him up. I mean what were they expecting? Blood all over the place? Come on! I have watched the birthing shows on TLC and Discovery Health and births really aren't as messy as people make them out to be. Besides, they couldn't have made it that messy, it was a family show! They probably did a little clean up as well, after all they were in a vet's office!

Now with the whole cattle incident thing at the wedding, something like that could happen to anyone. Not all weddings go off without problems. My dad had a broken leg when he married my stepmother.
On top of that, it's a TV show! Things are supposed to be slightly off the wall but somewhat realistic. I wish people could just watch the show and not over analyze everything. Just enjoy it for what it was instead of pointing out the stupid little minor inconsistencies.

First of all, I LOVE the show.

It is the only and will be the only series I own and have a second copy as a back-up!!!

I thought the finale was done very well. You show me a realistic comedy - actual birthing times, etc, and I'll point out that it was actually a reality show not a comedy and a reality show that wasn't edited very well. Some people make fun of things just to have something to talk about, I guess. Having said that, two episodes that I personally would like to have seen done differently were

Niles' proposal to Daphne
and
Niles and Daphne's Wedding

I thought the proposal could have been a little more romantic than Niles proposing on a botched night of Daphne being sick and all of his plans canceled.
I would have liked the wedding to have been more about their love for each other rather than them running around trying to make everybody else happy.

I loved the proposal episode. I thought it was very sweet and very romantic that even though Daphne was sick and not very appealing Niles was so in love with her that he just had to propose to her then and there!

I agree, Marv! And "The Proposal" led to a very wonderful fanfiction story called "Bedside Manner" by our own Andrea (Schmoopie)!

And as for "Goodnight, Seattle," I agree w/ everything Andress Jade said! I may be rather biased in saying this, but I LOVED the Niles and Daphne parts, w/ the baby and everything. I never even considered whether or not it was realistic! It just felt so good to finally see them together and starting a family!

Thank you, Kristen! I was happy to see Niles and Daphne happy with their baby. They were truly a family. Those scenes just made me melt! The way Niles looked at his son was just the sweetest thing, he looked so proud.

When my cousin had her son, she went into labor and within 20 minutes she had him. Labor and birth times vary.

When my mom had me she had been in labor all day but didn't feel anything until it came time for her to give birth. She was in labor for six hours and didn't feel a thing until it was time to have me.

I mean when Daphne went into labor we actually heard her water "break". We heard the splash when it hit the floor. And after she had David she still had her "belly". Most times on most shows, the women's belly's are flat immediately after birth which isn't realistic. They even put her on a gurney and took her in an ambulance, instead of her getting up and walking out. I have seen in some shows where the woman can get up and walk right after having a baby. That's impossible!

The show did it's homework. The nurse picked up David after he was born to clean him up, since he was still gross. Usually you see a baby born and they are sparkling clean.
I definitely had no complaints about the episode. There was even someone who said that the baby looked to tiny to be real. They were talking about when Daphne was holding him later at Frasier's apartment. I was that tiny when I was born. My dad could hold me in one arm with my head in his hand and my feet at the crook of his arm. Most shows have the baby look huge and it looks to big to be a newborn baby. The baby they used for David looked like a newborn.
Anyway, I will shut up now. I get on a certain subject and get on a roll. I was just upset by what was said. It was an amazing episode but extremely sad. One of the best finales ever in my opinion.

I think I know which website you're referring to. I guess everyone has their own opinions on the finale and I don't see what is so wrong with that. Some people analyze things more than others. Perhaps the people who analyze it more have a type A personality. I know Frasier is not the first show and certainly not the last show to be analyzed. Sometimes what makes discussions interesting is different view points. I don't think judging people on the way they perceive an episode or a show is fair.

I liked the finale. Did I think it was perfect? No, but what is nice is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Frasier is one of my favorite shows.

I'm not saying Frasier was perfect by any means and I'm not saying that people don't have the right to analyze the show. It just seemed like they were picking apart the episode and couldn't find anything good to say about it, that's what upset me. Sorry if you thought otherwise. I loved the episode and couldn't find one thing bad to say about it. That's all I'm saying, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I thought the finale had some nice parts.

Being a fan of N/D I would have liked to see more time focused on them, then again the show was called Frasier for a reason.

I think it would have been cool to have a 12th season. I would have liked to see how Niles and Daphne reacted to and cared for baby David. I'm sure they would have done great.

I think the speech Frasier gave in the finale was nice.

It's a great quote form a famouse poem. I think it was a nice touch that the show started off in the radio station and except for the very end on the airplane, it ended in the radio station. The episode certainly was heartfelt and kudos to the writers and actors/actresses for that.

I don't think the question about whether or not the baby used was a newborn or not was necessarily meant as criticism, but more out of curiosity. The baby was quite small, and silent. I could see how someone might wonder about it. Just my opinion.

I agree. You could tell how much they loved that baby. It was so sweet when they were holding him after he was born. We had a pretty good idea of what kind of parents Niles and Daphne were when they were at Frasier's apartment. They were holding him and carrying him around, you could tell he was a happy baby. I loved the part when Niles said that he had Daphne's eyes and his chin. AW.

I agree with this. I was in tears watching the ending. I loved the conversation between Martin, Frasier and Niles on the balcony and when Niles looked at his wife and son with tears in his eyes and said:"Look what I would have missed out on. Oh my God, they are beautiful." Great, great scene.

That's true but just because we didn't hear him cry doesn't mean anything. He did grab Daphne's hair and was making baby noises, like gurgling and babbling. Not all babies cry a lot. Alice didn't cry a whole lot either when we saw her after she was born and the baby that played Alice was huge for a newborn. The baby that played David looked like a real newborn. Just my observation.

Okay I admit that when I first saw the finale I was a bit disappointed, but now I love it! My favorite part is the end where Frasier comes out of the kitchen and Niles, Daphne, Martin and Ronnee are standing there. It's such a wonderful moment; them saying goodbye. I think I've watched "Goodnight Seattle" about 5 times now, and it was very well done. I know what you mean, Andress, about people being so nitpicky about how realistic or non-realistic episodes were. It is a sitcom and honestly I think it's more realistic than a lot of sitcom finales. I for one am EXTREMELY glad that they didn't show more details about David's birth. I'd rather see the 'sweetness' of it, than the actual process. I mean, we know what happened, and I think it was done very well. The fact that she gave birth in a vet's office is hilarious and I love that scene where Niles comes out of the office holding that monkey! ROFL!!
And how adorable was he walking around holding his newborn son at Frasier's? I wish they would have used a real baby for those scenes and at least showed his face once or twice, but it was still so sweet. And I loved him talking about how beautiful his family was.

BTW, Thank you, Kristen for mentioning my story. I had a lot of fun writing "Bedside Manner"!

I really liked the finale' as well. Kelsey said in an interview several seasons before the finale that he had an idea how to end it, so it wasn't something they weren't sure on how to do it.

I do believe some people are overly critical of the finale. There were some good laughs, loose ends were tied up while at the same time some new things left the door open for future incarnations. What more could you ask for? I never understood the "rushed" argument when it comes to series finales.

For a long-running series like Frasier it makes me wonder how viewing the finale during its original airing (and how invested you were with the series all those years) affects your opinion. I first watched it during the original primetime airing and I openly admit some manly tears were shed, particularly during the Ulysses poem and Frasier's consequential goodbye speech. How many finales actually contain farewell addresses?
