Where exactly was the "mainland"? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

It seems like the Skipper would sometimes refer to the mainland. This was in regards to his life as a ship captain. I imagined it was Honolulu. But I recently read somewhere that Hawaiians refer to the main part of USA as the "mainland".

So, what exactly was it? Honolulu? The US?

And if it was the US, where exactly? Los Angeles? San Diego?

Hawaii isn't considered the mainland. That would most likely be California.

I always just took it as anywhere other than the island or one of the near by islands.

I always assumed he was talking about the U.S. in general and not any one specific port.

Well, when they were rescued in Rescue From Gilligan's Island , they came into Honolulu.
