Something's I never understood about this show and this is one of them. How and/or why did that letter M become so iconic???

I'm not sure why, but people do seem to have an attachment when it comes to certain props on their favorite shows. Besides the "M", other favorite sitcom props of mine include the "a" and "z" bookends on The Bob Newhart Show, the horse statue on The Brady Bunch, and Rhoda's "etc".
