Default American characters

Why is it that the country that produced William Shakespeare cannot train actors to play American characters with accents that come even remotely close to what you’re likely to hear in America? I guess the Brits are trying to copy an American Midwestern accent- what you’d hear on a national news broadcast in the States- our version of the Brits’ Public School English. But what it sounds like an airplane engine monotone. It’s painful to listen to.

Cool

They should probably just hire american actors to play the american characters. After all British actors have been appearing on american TV shows for years.

I hate listening to Americans play English or Australian or South African people, because their accents just sound so false. It is the same with English people playing Americans, I though Hugh Laurie's accent was dreadful from the start and I was surprised he wasn't a laughing stock but had become massively popular. Its the same accent he used to use when he was doing sketches wearing weird clothes with Steven Fry. I'm from the mindset that you should always hire the most natural actor as possible, and this usually means hiring someone from the right country.

In the Britcom To the Manor Born Richard Devere and his mother both come from Eastern Europe. He grew up in Britain so he doesn’t have a foreign accent. But his mother does. However, if you pay close attention to Richard Devere’s mother and the mother of the wife of Rene Artois in Allo Allo you will realize that the accent is the same even though one is supposed to be French.
