Sexist? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Is this show considered slightly sexist by today's standards? I guess the premise about a guy with a beautiful wife who prefers to spend time with his buddy , the talking horse does seem a bit like that. Also I can't recall, but I think that Carol and Kay or something were talking about how it was their duties as wives to spend the money or something to that effect.

But all in all, I think it has a charm about it that is lost on today's shows.

Many TV husbands of that era were depicted as spending their leisure time with a buddy rather than their wives. For example Ralph Kramden spent much of his time with Ed Norton. Fred Flintstone spent the majority of his time with Barney Rubble. the only difference on this show was that Wilbur's buddy was a talking horse rather than another guy. I don't think it's sexist just a reflection of what society was like at the time the show was made.

Ed wasn't a just any horse...He could talk! No wonder Wilbur spent alot of time with him. Besides, look what trouble Mister Ed created when Wilber wasn't around.

Oh yeah. back than the wife's life was the housework and cooking . In those days their wasn't microwaves and instant food, food was made from scratch mostly. Women cooked big meals every night. And cleaning, this was before Swiffer mops, I remember my Mom on her hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor. Wives probably preferred the husband was out hanging around with his buddies and not bugging her, (even if the buddy was a horse) LOL!! She had enough time with him after dinner and in the evening. Today women work, and when we are off work we want to spend time with the hubby and have him help us with the house and cooking!
