Some of you may remember this story about the recovery of a bag of letters written by servicemen during WWII that was found in the attic of a woman's home in 1986. The postal service was still attempting to deliver some of the letters and the story was profiled on special 6. I just found an article which indicates that some of the remaining undelivered mail was finally delivered in February 1989.

Interesting. It's nice to know that many of the letters did get to their intended recipients. Also nice to have some more info on Staff Sgt. Sumpter Grubb in the earlier article.

Just found this article which seems to indicate that all of the letters were delivered and that the two from CF Smith were the last of the batch:

Odd that UM gets nary a mention in any of these articles. Then again the letters weren't all delivered until early 1989 and by then the UM segment was around a year old. Still I wonder how big a part (if any) UM played in getting those last few remaining letters to their destinations?

Upon looking, I found that both Merryll Rapley and Margaret "Peggy" Kimball both died in 1990. Same for the others named in the stories linked here.
I think the Rapley and Grubb stories are sweet. They made me cry. |

This segment actually made my mom and me really cry! Glad to hear that through dedication the mail was finally delivered.
