I'm alright - I felt shaking here that lasted about 20 seconds.
Facebook exploded with comments about it - as of now my landline and cellphone service is shot. Washington, D.C. Earthquake 2011: 5.8 Earthquake Hits Nation's Capital, Felt In New York 8/23/11 From the D.C. Alert system: "United States Geological Survey reports an earthquake in the Metropolitan Area registering at 5.9 on the Richter Scale. Small aftershocks reported. As safety measure if experiencing please take cover under a desk, table, bed or door frames. Stay clear of windows and other glass. Please stay put. If you are outdoors find areas clear of buildings. Stay tuned to radio and tv news updates." Preliminary reports are indicating that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in Virginia at 1:51 pm EDT., according to the USGS. Shaking has been reported as far north as New York. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0...1_lnk3%7C88711 |

Geologists have discovered a Fault line that runs from Virginia to New York. It goes under the White House. They've decided to call it Obama's Fault!

I am only about twenty miles from the epicenter, it was over pretty quick though. A lot of my junk fell of shelves and walls but that's about it.

I felt it slightly here in NYC at work. My desk wobbled a bit. We got evacuated from our building for abt an hr though. A precautionary measure I suppose.

Here's the clip of the Indians radio broadcasters, Tom Hamilton and Mike Hegan, as the earthquake was felt in Cleveland. (P.S. Shin-Soo Choo, who was the batter in this clip, went on to hit a 3-run, walk off home run to finish this game.)

Yeah, I was shocked when I heard there was an earthquake in Virgina. And especially one in the high-5 bracket. They do happen, but it's rare.
Looks like minimal damage and no lives lost so it could have been a lot worse. |

I guess some people here in Michigan could feel it, but I never did.

I live in VA, and I felt it. My office shook and the chain link fence outside of my window REALLY shook. It was only about 5 seconds though. Damage has been minimal and all of Federal buildings were evacuated and the workers got to go home early.
Just waiting for this weekend's hurricane drama to commence... |
