Movie Reviews: Fright Night


Fright Night is one of those rare horror flicks that actually attracts — horrors! — several decent reviews.





In the case of A.O. Scott’s in the New York Times, it’s even a jarringly cerebral one.

He writes that “sociological and psychosexual implications hover around the edges of the frame and between the lines of the dialogue without becoming annoyingly explicit.”





Several critics credit Colin Farrell — in a comic turn here — for lifting the film above the usual level of the genre.



Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News writes:

“Grabbing a rare chance to show off, he’s hilariously dry one minute, and terrifying the next.”





Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe agrees:

“Thanks to him, this Fright Night may even outlast its inspiration as a midnight movie guilty pleasure. In a sense, this is another sexy vampire movie,b ut Farrell does something special with the sexuality: It’s simultaneously omnivorous, dangerous, and a hoot.”





But Kyle Smith in the New York Post dismisses the notion that the movie could be regarded as “very daring, hilarious and mold breaking.”

It’s not, he writes. The “feeble comic one-liners and slow pacing combine for a routine fangfest.”
