Default Bread and Sugar?

I have only watched the first three seasons and so far my favorite episode is " Fat, Fat, the Water Rat." There is a scene in the episode where the group of kids Buffy is hanging out with get a snack. One of the kids' mom gives them Bread and Sugar because they were out of butter. Am I the only one that thinks that doesn't sound good at all? Was that common in the 60's?

Sounds good to me, too. And I love how the kid says 'bread and sug-a' and 'bread and butt-a'.

"Fat Fat" is my favorite episode of the entire series too. While "bread and sugah" doesn't sound too appetizing, I suppose the writers were trying to make a point about Buffy socializing in an underprivelaged neighborhood and assumed that's what they ate as a snack until dinner.

I remember eating bread with butter and sugar back in the early 70s. As I recall it was good but I couldnt imagine eating it now. That is one thing about being a kid--You can eat anything

So when you had it as a kid was it like it sounds, just bread with sugar on top? And parents today complain about Pixie sticks-lol

My uncle ate bread & sugar while growing up in the '40s in Europe -- the bread was comparable to Italian.

Watch closely when a far, exterior shot of an underprivileged neighborhood is shown -- the same shot is reused several times in the series when needed.

Sure, spread a light coat of real butter on a piece of white bread and sprinkle it with a small amount of sugar. Really good! Just don't go overboard on either the butter or the sugar.

I liked that episode because Buffy hung out with tough New York kids. And because she wore her hair down.

I loved that episode too! I wondered why Buffy only wore her hair down that once. It looked pretty. Bread and suga? WOW!!! Doesn't sound that good, even in the 1960's! Sounds like what my parents describe, being poor immigrant children from Europe in the 1930's and 40's! My dad's family was from Poland, came to a Pennsylvania coal mining town, they were so poor they ate bread and lard a lot!

I must have been more underprivileged, I ate pixie stix, no bread. It was fun pouring the flavored sugar straight into your mouth. Today parents won't even allow their kids to drink a soda. Water is all I ever see my nephew drink, talk about being underprivileged, he doesn't know what livin' is till you have pixie stick. (I wonder if they still sell them, Fizzies was my favorite drink.)

In addition to pixie stix, whenever there was a dinner at our church, we would tear open sugar packets and down them in one stroke! "Bottle Caps" candy was also popular, among the stuff that was nearly 100% sugar.

Oh yes, pixie sticks and bottle caps . Brings back memories!

Anyone remember candy cigarettes? Sticks of white sugar candy in a pack just like real cigarettes?
