I'm trying to figure out where the Simpsons stands now in terms of number of episodes, compared to other primetime shows(sitcom and drama) both past and present.

I know that the episode on January 6 was #276, and as far I can tell that puts it in the lead among current sitcoms and dramas(not including news shows like 60 Minutes, or afternoon soaps). As far as past shows go, Sitcoms Online says that the "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" ran for 14 years back in the 50s and 60s and had 435 episodes, and epguides.com says that the show Dallas had 357 episodes over its 13 year run.

Can anyone help me out with this and let me know if I'm missing any other shows, or does the Simpsons really have the second greatest number of episodes for any primetime half-hour sitcom ever, and the all-time third greatest number of episodes among primetime comedy or drama series?

I'm pretty sure that Gunsmoke and Lassie also have more episodes than The Simpsons.

Yeah. Gunsmoke ran for 20 seasons. Lassie also ran for 20 seasons.

Gunsmoke had 629 episodes not including movies
lassie had 588 episodes
Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet had 435

So Since the simpsons has 291 aired so far , it would take 14 more seasons of 24 episodes a season (which would be around the avg) to reach 627, then there would need to be a few more episodes in some of the seasons or a 15th seaons to reach gun smoke. So the Simpsons would have to air for at least 14 more seasons to have the most episodes. That means the Simpsons would have to have 27 seaons and run untill 2016 which is very unlikly

Perhaps, but that seems far more likely now than it did in 2002!
