Default Meet the Latest Odd Couple, Cindy Williams and Joanne Worley

Link

You don’t really know a person until you live with them.

In Surflight Theatre’s newest comedy, “The Odd Couple,” laugh along as two polar opposite friends share a roof but live in different worlds. Starring Cindy Williams, Shirley from the classic TV series “Laverne & Shirley,” and JoAnne Worley, star of Rowan & Martin’s “Laugh-In,” the play runs through Aug. 21 at Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven.
Worley plays uptight Florence Ungar, who moves in with the laid back, lazy Olive Madison, played by Williams. “The Odd Couple” begins with an evening of Trivial Pursuit and escalates into hilarious conflict between the pair.
Lynn Marie Stewart, best known as Miss Yvonne from the award-winning “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” (both the television series and the recent Broadway production) and June Gable, best known as Joey’s assistant on “Friends,” also appear in the show. The show is directed by Billy Van Zandt.
“There has never been such a collective level of experience and talent ever on the Surflight stage,” Miller said.
Williams breathes life into her role as Olive Madison with a carefree, adventurous attitude. From kicking her shoes across the room to throwing linguini against the wall, Williams is perfect in her role as the loveable slob. Meanwhile, Worley shines like the dishes her clean-freak character Florence Ungar obsessively washes.
Perhaps the real show stealer is Lynn Marie Stewart, who plays Vera, a dopey, well-intentioned friend of the women. Her bubbly, innocent manner is perfectly contrasted against June Gable, who plays Sylvie, a cynical chain-smoker.
“This show definitely goes against the usual,” producer Roy Miller said.
“The Odd Couple,” written by Neil Simon, was originally written for two male characters. The female version, Miller noted, is rarely done, which is the unique twist to Surflight’s production.
Miller had the pleasure of working with both Williams and Worley in his Broadway production of “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
“Ironically, they both played the same role at different times,” Miller said. “That’s why it’s so fitting that they are playing complete opposites in this show.
Performances are 8 p.m. tonight; 8 p.m. Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday; 2 and 8 p.m Aug. 16; 2 p.m. Aug. 17; 2 and 8 p.m. Aug. 18; 8 p.m. Aug. 19; 8 p.m. Aug. 20; 2 p.m. Aug. 21.Tickets range from $36 to $54. Purchase tickets in person at the box office at 201 Engleside Ave, online at www.surflight.org or by phone at 609-492-9477.

Cool

Maybe it's just me but I would have cast Cindy Williams in the uptight Florence Ungar role and JoAnne Worley in the lazy Olive Madison part. Either way I'm sure this will be a great play and I only wish I lived close enough to go and see it.

Sounds like fun to see them, but everyone had to be saying they should reverse roles. I can't see Cindy acting sloppy. But, what the heck, it's a play, not brain surgery.

I was thinking the same thing lol. Laverne & Shirley was like an Odd Couple sitcom.
