Bratt first appeared on the comedy's freshman season. His character is not only the ex-husband to Gloria (Sofia Vergara), but Manny's unreliable biological father. In the fall episode, Javier returns for a day at the races. "Jay feels possessive of Manny for the first time and wonders what he's allowed to do and what he isn't as his stepdad," executive producer Christopher Lloyd told the magazine. "The racetrack backdrop becomes kind of a competition between Jay and Javier for Manny."
