'Star Trek' to Return to TV.......As An Animated Series???

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have revealed that they are keen to produce a new Star Trek animated series.

The pair, who co-wrote and executive produced the 2009 Star Trek movie, discussed the project on radio show My Geek Time.

Orci said: "We have asked about [an animated Star Trek series]. We have asked what the rights are and who owns it and what are the possibilities.

"It is a very early [idea] and we are waiting to hear back. But we would love to do it."

Orci and Kurtzman recently developed Emmy-winning animation Transformers: Prime for cable channel The Hub.

"We learned a lot from that experience," Kurtzman said. "It would be cool to do something like that from Trek."

A previous Star Trek cartoon, based on the original series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, ran on NBC from 1973 to 1974.

JJ Abrams recently announced that a script for the sequel to 2009's Star Trek is still in the works, while Star Trek: The Next Generation star Jonathan Frakes revealed in April that CBS and Paramount had rejected his proposal for a new live-action series.
