Patrick Swayze's Widow Gives "Dirty Dancing" Remake her Blessing
Kenny Ortega Signs On To Direct Dirty Dancing Remake
Aug 9, 2011 by Joyce Eng Ready to have the time of your life again? Kenny Ortega, who choreographed Dirty Dancing, has signed on to direct a remake of the 1987 classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "The opportunity to direct 'Dirty Dancing' is like returning home for me," Ortega said. "Growing up in the '60s on the dance floor helped define me as a person and as an artist. I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring 'Dirty Dancing' to the screen for a new generation. Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him. I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can't wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats." No word yet on who will fill Patrick Swayze's and Jennifer Grey's dancing shoes as Johnny Castle and Frances "Baby" Houseman, respectively. The original, which cost $6 million to make, grossed $214 million worldwide. A 2004 sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, starring Diego Luna and Romola Garai, flopped. Ortega, best known for helming High School Musical 3: Senior Year and Michael Jackson's This Is It, is producing the project with Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries). Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote and co-produced the original, is in talks to join as a producer. http://www.tvguide.com/News/Dirty-Da...e-1036238.aspx |

Jennifer Grey Says She's "Excited" About Dirty Dancing Remake
Aug 11, 2011 by Robyn Ross Jennifer Grey says she's excited that Dirty Dancing is being remade. "I'm so excited about this news and I think there's nobody better to do this than my beloved Kenny Ortega who is as responsible as anyone for the success of the first one," she said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. "I can't wait to see what he's going to do with it." Grey, 51, originated the role of Frances "Baby" Houseman and co-starred with Patrick Swayze, who played dance instructor Johnny Castle. http://www.tvguide.com/News/Jennifer...g-1036304.aspx |

Swayze's Widow Gives Dirty Dancing Remake Her Blessing
8/12/11 Patrick Swayze's widow has given choreographer and moviemaker Kenny Ortega her blessing as he plots to remake classic 1987 movie Dirty Dancing. Ortega, who masterminded the dance scenes in the original, reveals both Swayze's wife Lisa Niemi and his co-star Jennifer Grey can't wait to see what he does in the reboot. He says, "Jennifer and I have been talking and she’s been so supportive, as has Lisa Swayze... and I couldn’t be more thankful for the outreach that has happened from the cast and crew members from the original movie." Ortega already has a leading lady in mind - Melanie Moore, the current favorite on U.S. TV talent show "So You Think You Can Dance". He tells UsMagazine.com, "I would elbow people out of my way to work with her. She is so versatile, so gifted." -IMDB News |

I think they should just do something 'similar' rather than redo the movie. I've seen "Havanna Nights" a few times and I actually like it. It's not like a sequel at all, because none of the Houseman's are even in it. It's a completely different couple on the dance floor. I don't even consider it to be a sequel. They should have just called it "Havanna Nights".

Actually it should be a prequel since Havana Nights took place during the Cuban Revolution which was prior to the events of Dirty Dancing. Patrick Swayze did appear in Havana Nights but not as the same character. |
