Rooms With a View - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I just watched Rooms With a View last night on TV and I have to say that this was one of the best episodes of the series. It was well-acted, heart wrenching, funny and memorable.
The best scenes in the episode for me are:

-When Maris calls and Daphne answers and Daphne tells Niles it's Maris and asks him if he wants to talk to her. Niles agrees to talk to her. In typical Maris fashion, she finds out about Niles' condition and calls him. She asks him all kinds of questions. Niles answers her questions to the best of his ability. Niles finds out that Jaime was the one who told Maris. He was Frasier and Niles squash valet.
Apparently Maris asked if it was a nurse who answered the phone.
Niles: "No that wasn't the nurse, it was my wife. Yes, Daphne. We were married a couple of months ago." Niles reaches up to grab Daphne's hand.

"It's not really my fault you didn't know, sounds like your argument is with Jaime. Well if it makes you feel any better we didn't invite anyone." He motions the anesthesiolgist to give him a sedative which he had refused before.
"Yes, uh huh. Well, of course we invited him, he's my brother. Yes, William Sonoma and Tiffany's." He motions for the anesthesiologist to give him more as he continues talking to Maris as the scene fades out.
What I loved about that scene was the delivery of DHP's lines as he was talking to Maris and when he reached up to grab Daphne's hand, and she took both of hers in his. It was like he was reaching for her for comfort and to make sure she was really real. I mean he was talking to his ex-wife with his current wife standing there, he needed all the comforting he could get. LOL. It was very sweet.
From the conversation on Niles end it sounded like Maris was just as controlling and nosy as she had ever been and it was like Niles was thanking his lucky stars that he had Daphne by his side. He was probably wondering what he ever saw in Maris. This is proof of how different Maris and Daphne were. Daphne was Niles comfort and rock, and was there for him, whereas Maris was the exact opposite. She did nothing for Niles but treat him like a servant, not a husband.

-The next one is when Niles is talking to Daphne before being wheeled off to surgery. Niles keeps saying Daphne's name and she asked him why and he just said that he wants to say it as much as possible. Aw.

-I love the part where he is talking about how a hospital is an interesting place. "All roads lead to the hospital, you are born here, you get sick here, we get well here. All these big, dramatic moments in the hospital just gobbles them up. Do you think a hospital has memories? I bet it does. I bet when I walked in it thought, oh you again. You are the little boy who broke his leg in 1966, hello old friend. Wow a talking hospital, that would be cool." Classic DHP.

-The next scene was when Daphne lost it and broke the glass on the vending machine with the fire extinguisher. She broke down crying in front of everyone.
"He's not a diagram! He's my husband and he's on a table with his chest cut open! I'm sorry if I can't handle this as well as the rest of you but I'm terrified!"
"There is no when this is over! There's no tomorrow, no next week, no next year, there's nothing until he comes out of there and I know he's okay!"
In this scene we could tell how much Daphne really cared about and loved Niles and how she wouldn't be able to go on without him. She needed him and he needed her. Jane's acting was superb. She nailed it. She had me crying right along with her.

-The last one was when Daphne is walking down the hallway after seeing Niles after his surgery. She is wiping her eyes and then we see Niles and Daphne with their children. It was a great way to end the episode. It gives us a brief and promising glimpse into the future.

Superb acting, and superb writing. They blended the perfect mix of sadness and comedy in one episode. Brilliant.

Yes, definitely a great episode. I think the best part is when Daphne breaks down and makes Frasier realize that Niles isn't a diagram. He's a person. Also the concern she had was very moving.

I know! Jane isn't given enough credit. She is a superb actress. When given the chance she can really shine.

Someone pointed out to me that Jane was the only one in the whole episode who wasn't given a single funny line. I hadn't noticed before but they were right. I guess the show did that to show us the contrast of how she handled Niles' condition compared to the others who were making jokes and making light of things.
Just an amazing episode.

Oh, I love this episode...Jane does such an awesome job. Makes me want to hug Daphne every time!

One of the parts that kills me is when Niles starts saying Daphne's name over and over.

This is a wonderful episode but the only thing I wish they had done differently is had either Frasier or Martin console Daphne after she broke the candy machine. I like Roz but I think that scene would have been more touching had Frasier realized that he was being ridiculous and that he was as worried about Niles as Daphne was. But still I thought everyone did a great job in it and I loved it that Maris called (and drove Niles crazy to the point that he wanted the drugs!). It shows that she cares about him, but I can just imagine how shocked she was to hear that he was married. I'm definitely going to watch this episode again as soo as I can.

It just showed how different Maris and Daphne were. Yes, Maris may have still cared about Niles but I don't think she loved him. She treated him like a slave all during their marriage. She was very selfish. Niles should have rubbed his marriage to Daphne in Maris' face more.

It really was an amazing episode.

I've seen this episode a lot of times but I was watching it last night and noticed something I've never noticed before. It's when Frasier is arguing with the doctor, then the camera pans over to have Frasier, Niles, and Daphne in the frame. It's really subtle, but if you watch Niles first, then Daphne, you can see that they roll their eyes at each other while Frasier is talking. Niles does it first... he looks at her for a second, then clearly rolls his eyes (at 5:15 in the link below). She does too, but hers is harder to notice because she's standing right next to Frasier and doesn't do it as obviously. Maybe you guys have noticed that before, but I hadn't and it was too funny when I saw it last night!
The moment to keep your eyes on Niles starts at 5:12 through 5:15, then if you go back and watch her at that time you'll see her just barely roll her eyes back.

I just have to say that your suggestion of Frasier or Martin consoling Daphne there sounds like an excellent basis for a fanfic. *hides*

As for the comments about this episode and Jane's acting, I agree 100%! Definitely one of the best ones, and she did an amazing job. "He's not a diagram, he's my husband!" Just picturing that now makes me want to hug her! It's very hard to watch, but SUCH a good episode, both acting and writing-wise!
