I remember the Sonny And Cher Christmas episode where Cher sang One Tin Soldier over The Coven video. Does that count? Up until 1979/80 I didnt give videos much of a thought.

The first video I saw on MTV was some crappy video by a group called Saga. I can't remember the name of that awful song.

Not sure...but it might have been the famous Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star".

In 1967 Penny Lane & Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles, the first video ever to show the performers not mouthing the words. Just pure art form. The first actual music video dates back to the Ozzie & Harriet show when Ricky Nelson was shown singing "Traveling Man" over scenes of Hawaii.
One could also argue it started in the 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night" which combined the artform of "the romp" which lead to the series and group "The Monkees" in 1966. I am not counting short musical theatrical shorts from the 40's because they usually just showed a performance with the band playing or singer performing. So thank The Beatles and Ozzie Nelson for starting the creative artform, what a combination. |
