Right now, Im struggling to find a job. Nothing is out there for me. The passion I have is tv, especially classic tv. By the posts I have on this board you can kind of tell, or I hope you can tell, that Im passionate about classic tv. This is where the title of this post comes in. Can anybody on this board help me figure out how to start a classic tv station? I will eventually post what would be on the station but can any of you help me.
The reason why I asked Pavan was because hes very knowledgable with tv and does a great job with this site, posting news and whatnot. Maybe he can give me a little insight on how to start a classic tv station. I've also thought about a real music channel to challenge mtv, a real classic sports channel to challenge ESPN Classic, even though thats not much of a challenge. I know Im going out on a limb here because I am kind of new to the board but if anybody can help me with this I would truly appreciate it. Thank you. |

All kidding aside, you need some serious cash to start a tv station.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys!! Its really much appreciated. Do u think theres a lot of money pumped into ME TV, Antenna TV or RTV? I say that just because there really not national stations. I mean there growing but for them to start, I just wonder how much cash was invested.

Millions upon millions of dollars are invested. Why not apply or even intern at a tv station to start? |

That acutally sounds like a good idea Brian. I just may do that. Like I said before, U guys dont know me that well and not to sound like I have a big ego or anything, which I dont, but I think I can change the way tv is done. I mean Ive read a lot of posts on here about how people are mad with the way tv is done. ESPN, Soapnet, MTV, TV Land, Nick at Nite etc. I read a lot of complaints. I would like to try to change that, if possible. I think theres so much untapped resources that nobody is trying and just shoveling the same crap down our throats. I mean when is it going to end?

Maybe you could consider producing your own line of DVDs of classic material? If you're successful in obtaining good source material, then you could eventually move on to selling syndication packages.
If you want to pursue something like that, I would contact someone like Tom Stathes, who has worked on release of early, silent animation -- maybe he could advise you as to startup costs, website design, etc. as far as DVD production. |

I agree with the person who said you should start by trying to get a job at a local tv station. Maybe you could slowly work you way up and convince an affiliate to air some classic tv as a starter. I know where I live we have "Lunchtime with the Classics" at noon everyday on our local NBC affiliate which includes shows like "Get Smart," "Cheers," "I Love Lucy," "Family Ties," etc |

http://cartoonsonfilm.com/ I don't know him personally -- he's accomplished a lot at a young age and seems like a very friendly guy. I thought maybe he could fill you in a little as far as getting into older material -- and it would seem that what he's gone through with animation would apply to other material, like older TV product. |

You could always start an internet channel on something like Ustream, Veetle or TVU. Legality at your own discretion but there's always public domain material. Best of luck.

I am an unemployed broadcaster and it's notoriously hard to get into broadcasting. The only way you could do it is if you went to school for it then interned. Most stations will not allow you to intern unless you are a student or it's a very small station.
What you are talking about in theory sounds fun but is hard and would cost you millions between buying the shows to the equipment. Not to mention all the legalities. I know I have an idea for a TV show but would cost me millions unless I got producers to put up money, but too many producers would mean I would losr control of my idea anyway. |

I agree that's why I stopped pursuing a career in broadcasting because it was no way to get in if you didn't know anyone in the business |
