Ted Bundy's DNA to be Added to FBI Database - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Ted Bundy is one of the most infamous serial killers in U.S. history, but now the discovery of one of the vials of his blood could add even more bodies to his list of victims.

The serial killer was executed in 1989 after confessing to more than 30 murders, but he could be tied to even more killings thanks to a detective who came across the vial of blood taken in 1978. It was still on file.

A complete DNA profile of Bundy will be uploaded to FBI's national database this week.

Reports say that investigators have previously believed that the evidence from Bundy's rape and murder of a 12-year-old Florida girl was destroyed and this isn't the first time that authorities have tried to build a complete DNA profile on Bundy.

The News Tribune reported:

"About 2002, the lab received a partial profile of Bundy's DNA. A private lab had developed the profile based on tissue taken from Bundy's body before he was cremated.

The profile was too limited to be put into the FBI's database but it could be used for comparisons when detectives call about unsolved slayings where Bundy was a suspect."

Washington reports that they hope that this new evidence will help solve a cold case in Tacoma on an 8-year-old girl who disappeared in 1981:

"Her mother found the living room window open ajar and the front door open ajar. She was never seen again. Bundy lived in Tacoma as a boy and frequently visited his uncle who lived in the Burr's neighborhood.

Before his execution Bundy wrote to Ann Marie's parents... and responded to questions they had about their daughter. He denied having anything to do with her disappearance."

The FBI says that it will issue a nationwide alert when the serial killer's profile goes into the database.

This would really help with alot of unsolved cold cases for sure.

I've always believed there are far more victims than we know about. Really hoping this solves some cold cases.

As the others have already pointed out, I was implying with an exaggeration that there are going to be a lot of hits to Bundy's DNA, so much that the computers might overload.

Its long been accepted by the authorities that there are more crimes that Bundy is responsible for. Bundy even tried to delay his death sentence by appearing to want to work with the authorities to go through unsolved crimes that he may have been responsible for.

I am actually excited to see what this may lead to. Funny how many times law enforcement magically "finds" "lost" or "misplaced" items years and years later.

What a comedy of errors to even obtain some DNA left from Bundy! Absolutely ridiculous what lengths had to be gone to before they found a sample.

The person(s) digging for DNA called down to Florida where he was executed, NO DNA; they asked author Ann Rule for envelopes that he may have licked during his correspondence with her, NO DNA; a piece of tissue from Bundy that was stored by some agency, NO DNA; finally from some other agency in Florida, a vial of Bundy's blood was found preserved, ALAS! DNA!

He was executed in 1989, yet a lot of these agencies, including where he was executed were not collecting blood or DNA at that time before execution or when he was processed.... They said they just didn't think of it. Really, that wasn't that long ago!

Actually it was that long ago, and DNA profiling was in its infancy. It really was something they just didn't think about, because it wasn't a common practice back then. I'm assuming it would have been more expensive back then as well, and they would have needed a much larger sample than what they need now.

Even if DNA testing was not available at the time, 1989 was hardly the dark ages. How were they stupid enough not to save samples before executing him?

I agree, it was TED BUNDY after all! You think they'd have saved his brain to study or something!

I'm not sure it would have done any good. I've read that serial killers' brains have been preserved and studied before, and typically no abnormalities have been found. John Wayne Gacy's was one such brain that yielded that result.

I honestly believe most serial killers are just the product of a dark path that was triggered by various events in their life or influences, and they can rarely get back.

I am sure an attempt was made to study Jeffrey Dahmer's brain but perhaps blocked by his family? Don't know about Bundy's.
