Cowboys and Aliens looks good. The Smurfs looks like all of the other "cartoon characters brought into the real world" movies(Rocky and Bullwinkle, Fat Albert, etc etc etc)....Wait for DVD release on that.

I hate the way CGI keeps ruining my Saturday morning cartoons - first the Chipmunks and now the Smurfs.

Final Box Office Numbers: It's Cowboys by a Hair Over Smurfs
Published: August 01, 2011
By Daniel Frankel

Universal's genre mix-up Cowboys & Aliens narrowly beat out Sony's over-performing kiddie film The Smurfs at the weekend box office, final Monday revenue tallies revealed.

Cowboys grossed $36.4 million over the weekend, according to Universal, while Sony says Smurfs took in $35.6 million.

Going before that, I think Casper in 1995 started the CGI based on cartoons.

I'm not aware of any CGI adaptations that came before that.

I don't know what I hate more: CGI or 3-D. I really don't get their appeal.

Cowboys and Aliens really bombed, but I'm not surprised; the premise just didn't sound good.

I really like watching 3D... but it's definitely way overused now, especially for financial reasons, far more so than artistic ones (the tacked on 3D in the Clash of the Titans remake being an obvious example of that)... I'm less fond of CGI, but it depends on the type of movie it's in, and how necessary it is to effectively (and realistically) bring something to life on screen... I've been a fan of the Hulk tv series since it originally aired in the '70s, when the character was played by actors, but I absolutely hated the contemporary CGI movie version/s of the character, so I couldn't enjoy the movies...

I notice that Green Lantern has disappeared quietly from the Top Ten, making very little impact.

It's a shame because he's a great character but even though I haven't seen it, I was afraid from the trailers and the casting of Ryan Reynolds that they were missing the target, badly.

Still think that Matthew Fox would have made a GREAT Hal Jordan!

The stupid thing too was, they made Odie a real dog instead of CGI made no sense.
