ATLANTA -- The Georgia Aquarium has a new mascot, and it’s named after a Hollywood icon.

The aquarium has named its new dolphin character mascot “Betty” after actress Betty White.

White has had a relationship with the Georgia Aquarium since 2010 when she had a life-changing experience with one of the Aquarium’s Beluga whales named Beethoven. White even wrote about the experience in her latest book.

“Betty White truly believes in the dedicated work Georgia Aquarium does on behalf of aquatic animals,” aquarium president and COO David Kimmel said. “Her commitment to supporting awareness for our research and conservation programs is remarkable, and her enthusiasm, understanding and passion for all animals make her an ideal ambassador for the zoological community.”

White has been a longtime animal advocate, working with organization such as the Los Angeles Zoo, the Morris Animal Foundation, and Actors & Others for Animals.

With an acting career spanning back to 1939, White is best known for such roles as Sue Ann Nivens on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Rose Nylund in the hit sitcom “The Golden Girls” and is currently starring as Elka Ostrovsky in “Hot in Cleveland.”

How cool! I've been to the Georgia Aquarium too, and have a beluga whale shirt from there!
