Why didn't bily joel do the theme song for the show my life

too expensive - he should've just let them use the song on the dvd release for a nominal fee; he has more money than God and it would've gotten his music back in the spotlight for awhile.

The other thing is...Billy Joel was busy with the album "Glass Houses" (Released in 1980) so he may have just let Bertie Higgins (Who had that hit "Key Largo") sing it.

Did Billy Joel actually own the rights to his songs at that time? I know he was in and out of court over the life of his music career.

Indeed, he did. In 1978, Walter Yetnikoff, president of Columbia Records, Joel's record label, bought back Joel's publishing rights from Family Productions head Artie Ripp and gave them back to Joel as a birthday present.

I'm sure money was part of it -- Joel was in his commercial prime and it would have cost big bucks to license his original recording.

It's also possible -- and I'm just speculating here -- that Joel may not want to have his original version used as the theme song for a TV show.
