June Could Be Annoying At Times

As much as I love this show, when June would worry about Wally and the Beaver, sometimes her overractiong would get annoying, particularly in the first three seasons.


What do you think???

I tend to agree, though I'm not sure thats what I call annoying. Some moms are like that. However, I can name 2 episodes in particular that June made me mad. One was "Visiting Aunts" because she didn't bother checking with Ward and the boys if they had previous plans before she accepted Martha's unexpected visit and then when she did know that the boys would be leaving at a certain time to go to the fair, she INSISTED that snooty and tooty stay for lunch, despite their plans. Then in Beaver and the brussel sprouts, I feel she was just way over the top.....period!

Yeah she seriously overrated over the brussel sprouts.

I love her but she did make me mad a few times. She would tell people that Wally or Beaver would do something for them then tell Wally or Beaver or Ward would come home from work and she would tell him to go talk to the boys about what ever.

I have to admit there is one time I sided with June when she would worry, and that was in the episode Beaver The Athlete. Ward made too much of a fuss about Beaver getting a D in gym and that he was not a good athlete like Wally. I think sometimes fathers and society in general puts too much pressure on boys to be great in sports. I hate sports and was never good at any of them, and I turned out alright.

I agree and then there was the time when Beaver ran away. She had merit to worry then too.

I never found her annoying,but I agree she was very out of character in the brussel sprouts episode.No doubt the writers fault on that episode. If anything the fact that she worried about the kids and was a little uptight played well off of Ward who was overall a very relaxed and mellow type of guy.

There were scripts that had her seemingly over-protective. Such as when Wally wanted to go to an all-night party in connection with his high school graduation. While such events were very common then (such as prom dances), June was against, saying to Ward that it sounded like a party they would give on "The Untouchables".

A few years earlier, Wally road back from a camp-out in the back of a truck on a Saturday afternoon and was out in the the rain. He was sent to bed by June and told he needed to stay there on Sunday as well so he would be able to go to school on Monday.

I agree. June was over the top in those episodes. Another episode that comes to mind is when she is upset that Wally doesn't want to take Kitty Bannerman to the country club dance and when Wally is found out about faking practice, she say's " I will accept the invitation for you Wally". It's like every social function she was adamant that the boys attend.

Yes, June is 'annoying' when she reacts so overprotectively of the boys, as well as when something of a 'social' nature isn't going her ideal way or might make her or her family seem less than perfect. But I really see that as just giving necessary character traits to the ideal wife and mother, raised to do everything 'proper' and knowing little about boys and their normal interests as they grow up. But to top it off, she was usually right in her anxieties... she was afraid when Ward got off the phone and told her Aunt Martha left the boys at the train station to buy their own tickets, and they spent too much money on snacks and comic books to pay their fares. She didn't think the boys should be left alone overnight, and Beaver left the bathtub running and they ruined ceiling plaster. She was irate when she heard Ward telling them about his barrel hoop trap-- Ward said kids 'today' wouldn't go for that kind of retaliation, but that's exactly what they did. Even when she tried to suppress her own anxieties she was right-- as when Wally's guests were late for his party and she heard it was because "some kid fell in a bowl of soup on a billboard;" she stopped in worry, then said, "Oh, couldn't be-- he (Beaver)'s over at Whitey's."

If there were no one to worry about what might happen-- which did happen-- the action would be a bit duller. That's a big role of June in the series.

Speaking of social graces or social ideas back then, they are a big part of why I'm so attracted to this era.

I agree about that. Social graces are what is lacking in todays society. I was just pointing out that she would never allow them to miss one or two and freaked out a bit. They had to go to every one of them. I guess she was afraid they would be anti-social.
