I've never been a fan of Beverly myself, indeed, Archie The Hero is my least favourite episode of the series to date (I've seen all bar Season 9), with Edith's Crisis of Faith, Part 1 not far behind.
If you ask me, it shows that the writers couldn't really come up with good recurring foils for Archie after the Jeffersons and Lorenzos left the series, and I have a feeling if Archie The Hero had been written in say, Season 3, it would have found its way into the waste paper basket. What are your thoughts? |

I loved Beverly and I love how they fleshed out the character so that she was NOT a cartoon. The character's ending was heartbreaking, but sadly an all too true occurrence. Once again, proof positive that AITF never shied away from controversial topics and took the easy way out.

I have to say that the episode where Edith questions God after Beverly's passing is a POWERFUL one. When Edith breaks down and Mike comforts her...it just shows why the program won so many Emmys and why the characters were so real. Some aspects of the show may be dated today, but scenes like this one are timeless. I just recently saw this particular episode, and it was indeed gut-wrenching. Kudos to all involved!!

I enjoyed the appearance of Beverly Lasalle and the scene below.
Beverly-"Mr. Bunker I told you I'm no Lady" Archie-"How you earned this money is no business of mine" LOL |

By the time that episode aired, AITF, whilst not ruling the roost, was still immensely popular. In order to keep up this popularity, the writers wanted to write another powerful Christmas episode in the vein of Edith's Christmas Story (S4) or The Draft Dodger (S7). Having Edith question her faith may have been on the cards for some time, but how to execute this idea was another. Beverly La Salle, being "different" from most, if not all the other characters on AITF, along with being popular with many viewers, was the perfect character to use in an episode about prejudice and religion. In order to make a strong point, the writers ultimately decided to kill off Beverly, and make a 2-part episode about the murder and its aftermath. Also, the writers probably didn't want to overuse Beverly (how many stories can you write involving a transvestite?), so they decided to kill her off, and as a result she could not be brought back at a later date. Again, this is just my two cents. |
