I read an article where there was such an outcry from the NAACP over Amos & Andy. The writer says that characters like Fred Sanford were exactly the same as that but no outcry....Would you consider that to be accurate?

Because Sanford and Son presented more than just a clownish character. In addition to the clown Fred Sanford, the show included social issues and made references to national concernes. So the stereotypical black character was part of a New type of comedy that was started by Norman Lear 1970. Amos and Andy on the other hand was just a CLOWN show. It had no normal black characters on the show and the show made no reference to social issues, Every character on Amos and Andy was either a crook or clown. So when White audiences see this type of show they think that all black people are the same.

So in Sanford and Son Lamont was nothing like his father who was well spoken and intelligent black which made the show more acceptable to the NAACP

Not every character was a crook or a clown, Amos Jones was one exception. He had a family and a steady job and was basically the straight man of the series.

In an interview once Redd Foxx admitted his characterization of Fred Sanford was based on the Kingfish character from Amos & Andy.

He was stereotypical at the time this show aired. Poor black man with limited education.

This didnt change until Jeffersons premeired
