Default Did Chrissy Get Dumber Between Seasons 1 and 4?

I seem to recall in seasons 1 and 2 that Chrissy was a little smarter than she was in season 4. I guess the writers must have felt that she wasn't dumb enough for a blonde so they had to make her even dumber. So stereotypical. Or maybe they just felt being dumber would make her funnier. I also think Suzanne was much prettier in seasons 1 and 2.

I think they did dumb her down. That tends to happen in a lot of shows, they have that one character that is a bit stupid, but not real bad off, they see that this character is popular and then decide to take their stupidity even further to get more ratings.

Yep, that does happen a LOT. It's too bad, too, because this tactic tends to drain whatever depth the character had right out of him/her.

Yes!!! In the first two seasons, she was just a little ditzy. Then as season three and four went on, she just became plain out dumb to the point that I really no longer liked her character.

Her appearance changed too -- she began wearing little ponytails in her hair, and long bangs (fringe), and maybe heavier eye makeup.

I don't remember her being that dumb in season 3. It's seems to me that the shift started when they ran out of MATH episodes to use as a basis. Before that, they were trying to fit the girls with the MATH dialog, even though they had changed their personalities. The result was that the characterizations weren't as exaggerated.

Once the writers started making their own dialog, I noticed a dramatic change in both Chrissy and Janet. Chrissy became extremely dumb. Janet, who had always been down to earth, and a bit bossy, had become this impatient *itch (not sure what I'm allowed to say on this forum) who was constantly rolling her eyes at Chrissy's blondisms.

What you said about that happening in other shows, brings up a good point. That also happen to Mrs. Howell in Gilligans Island. She seemed smarter in season 1 than she did in 2 or 3. So I agree with you.

In Season 4, she was so dumb AND annoying that I wanted to smack her.

Yeah, I didn't like that. She looked so much better before with more natural makeup and no bangs.

Season 4 she was over the top dumb to a point of wanting to slap her. That would had gotten old quick if she would had continued on the show. Season 4 I did like how Janet revolved from the plain Jane look to sexy with that short haircut. They put Janet in better clothes to show her figure off more. I was so glad when she got rid of that god awful perm.

Yeah she got alot dumber and more annoying after the second season. She was always the weakest part of the cast anyhow, even in the early seasons. The other actors and actresses carried her if you will. However at least she did not harm the show like she did everytime she was onscreen in her later seasons. And I remember when she held out and wanted about 100 thousand dollars per episode to return to the show.Back then of course that was an almost unheard of amount of money for even most of the premier actors in tv shows .It must have been a VERY easy decision to write her out and replace her.

Yes! She did. By the fourth season she was so dumb the title of the show also stated how many brain cells she had...3.

Though, I still liked her. Wish Suzanne would have stayed.

Yes, I agree. She kind of had that Joan Jett look going on. Not to mention that Joyce was the spokeswoman for L'Eggs at the time, which gave her more opportunities to show of her gams. How many seasons did she wear that perm, anyway?

I sort of thought the short hairstyle made Joyce's eyes stand out more. As Chester (Dennis Weaver) used to sing on Gunsmoke, "She got them big eyes...!"

Season two except the last couple of episodes of that season where her hair was somewhat straight and the first episode of the 3rd season where she had hair pins in her hair most of that episode then she went back to the perm until the last few episodes of the third season where she cut her hair but you still see bits of the perm in there. The beginning of season 4 where she did the Joan Jett look which I thought was her best one with short hair but in season 6 through 8 she looked great with her hair long and the short skirts she was wearing. The perm look gave Janet too much of a plain Jane look not showing her natural beauty. Joyce DeWitt is naturally attractive.
