Default Clampett Mansion is Impossible!

Ok people talk about how out of scale the Brady's house is but have you ever noticed the Clampett mansion?

Ok first off;

When you enter through the front entrance, to the left there is a room, which I assume leads to a hallway which leads to the kitchen *they always go into that room and come out through the laundry room into kitchen*

BUT there are windows in the parlor on the left side as you enter in from the front hall! How can there be windows there when a "hallway" of some sort is supposed to be there leading to the kitchen?

Another thing that's funny is, I remember that room *on the left hand side of the front entrance in the front hall* being shown once, when Granny had Mrs Drysdale's father in there entertaining him, and it just looked like a regular room, no sign of any hallway leading out of it lol.

OK another thing is, in the exterior shots the front entrance is in the center of the mansion and it looks HUGE with a LOT of space on both sides of the door, but on the inside it clearly ends not far from the front entrance, b/c there is a window in that "mystery room" to the left of the front entrace.

I'd love to see a floor plane of the Clampett mansion.

Talk about confusing! It's murder in fanfiction! That's why I generally try to stay away from being to descriptive when I talk about moving from one room to the other.

The thing is, I always thought the Clampett's mansion was a REAL mansion on the inside, I mean I always thought they filmed in a real masion. At least that's what I was always told.

You know, that's another thing that's always confused me too. If it was a real house I feel sorry for the people who live there because I wouldn't be able to figure out how to get in and out of the damn place, let alone figure out how to get to the kitchen. I'm surprised they don't starve to death.

A friend and mine and myself sorta drew up a floor plan of the Clampett mansion.

The best we could come up with, the "mystery room" on the left hand side of the front entrance that leads to the kitchen leads outdoors, we have it to where there is a screened-in *or somehow enclosed "catwalk" type thing runs along side of the windows in the parlor.

And we put the kitchen in the front of the mansion but WAY over the far right of the front entrance if you're looking at the front of the house.

Ok, I think I'm getting a picture of what you're talking about. If the kitchen is where you think it is, then that would mean that the screen door leads to the side yard. So we actually never get to see the back yard unless that's where the tennis court is. In which case, we have seen the whole yard. Or maybe my brain is seeing the whole thing wrong. I've been handling fireworks and nearly blew my thumbs off, so there's a good chance I've inhaled too many chemicals! LOL!

The answer is: you're not supposed to notice. It was assumed that most people wouldn't really give little details like that much thought and in fact most didn't. There are countless similar examples of inconsistencies between the exteriors and interiors of what was supposed to be the same TV house. It didn't seem to make a great deal of difference whether the exterior was somebody's real home or just a shell on the studio backlot, beyond matching of the front door and maybe location of a window or two, there was little or no consideration given to whether the contours of the sets matched the house whose interior was supposedly depicted.

On Knots Landing the production company actually owned the Val and Gary Ewing house and there were still obvious inconsistencies between the real house and the interior--though for TV it was about as good as it gets and much better in that regard than the other houses in the cul-de-sac.

Bewitched is another example of close--but not quite, despite the "house" being located on the studio backlot. My favorite though is Mindy's apartment from Mork & Mindy. The establishing shot from outside zoomed in on the stained-glass window in Mindy's kitchen. But if that's the same window shown on the outside of the building, watch your step exiting the door from Mindy's apartment, the first step is about a twelve foot drop!

Yeah I'm my friend and I have the Kitchen being to the very far right in the front of the mansion. I'm thinking the billiard room/fancy eating room would be more toward the back. AND the Clampettes occasionally mentioned that it was a LOT further to the kitchen when you went there via the "mystery room" and that WOULD be a long way, like walking all the way around the mansion. And plus putting the kitchen in the front accounts for all that extra space you see on the side.

Yeah that's the obvious reason, but I've always been very perceptive, even when I was like 6 or 7 years old I used to notice stuff like that. I used to ask my mom things like that when I was a little kid and she was like, "Oh you're not supposed to notice that!" lol

And I used to also wonder WHERE the Clampett's dining room was, SURELY a house that size would have a huge formal dinning room. I know they used the billard room for that, but WHAT did they think the real dining room was?

TV

An early episode shows four clips of Jethro running straight from the front door to the back door: entrance, parlor, pantry, and kitchen.

The main thing I don't understand is HOW there are windows in the parlor BUT there is supposedly a hallway on the other side of that wall leading to the kitchen.

I noticed that as a child.

One time when the Clampets came home after being out for a while Jed just oped the door. I thought, what isn't it locked? Aren't they afraid somebody will steal something? I know it's just a TV show, but still.
