Not to mention all the times James took out his pool stick to win a few bucks - she always got on him for that!!!

Inconsistent writing, plain and simple. She throws J.J. out of the house for even associating with "hoodlums" but later on regularly allows "Sweet Daddy" Williams into her home and clearly doesn't object to J.J.'s "friendship" with him. Granted, she might feel that she has no choice in the matter without James around (who made HIS feelings on the matter quite clear during Sweet's introductory episode), but when she learned that J.J. took money from him to pay for Thelma's wedding, she hardly batted an eye.

The British have the right idea when it comes to writing a series, I think.

Speaking of British TV, have you seen The Fosters, the UK remake of Good Times? If so, how does it compare to the original?
