Well, it's not homework, but if anyone's willing to take my finals for me next week, I would be more than happy to allow them to. ::shudders:: It is so WRONG to make them 1/5 of the semester grade... I don't think I'll do badly on my written tests, but in theatre I have to perform and in band I have 40 seconds to play 12 scales! Eek! And those two are on the same day! Curses!

Think if I go into a coma they won't make me take them? Knowing those evil people at my school, they would.

That doesn't sound so bad. I had to do that once and everything came out fine. I'm sure yours will too!

woah! In band, we don't have to do anything for midterms, finals, etc. In cooking we have to cook with everyone watching you, but that's not that bad. Good Luck!!

Woah! Our mid terms/finals are really different. First of all they set a week aside so that you can take them all. And the way they calculate them into your grade is really complecated. They don't count for anything in the class, they are marked on a seperate part of the interim things sent home. Anyway, we have 4 quarters, and the midterm and finals COMBINED is worth the same as 1 quarter- which makes them 1/5 of you total average or whatever. So midterms are worth 10% of our FINAL grade...the one you get at the end of the year. And they are counted for 10% when you calculate your class rank at the end of the year, too.

Can you guys give me your opinions for something? Do you think Puerto Rico should become the 51st state? Why or Why not? I'd appreciate for any input.

I don't think so. I mean, they seem fine not being a US state. Besides, I thought I heard they didn't want to become a state.

Ok my two cents on a few things here:

LaverneShirley, it kind of sucks that your finals are worth 1/5 of your total grade in the class, but look at it this way: you may have a leg up when you get to college, as many college finals are sometimes worth up to 1/3 or 2/5 of your grade ( about 30-40%). Now granted, not all college classes are this way, and in fact you will have the occasional class that doesn't have finals or midterms at all, but many of the classes I have taken, the final is worth about 1/3 of my grade. So since you are used to it, you sure as heck won't be blowing off studying for them and may fare better.

As for Puerto Rico.....I am inclined to say that they should either be a state, or they should be an independent nation. None of this commonwealth/colony stuff. There are many arguments on both sides of the issue. Puerto Rico receives large amounts of U.S. monetary support, so making Puerto Rico a state would actually probably be good from an economic standpoint for the U.S., because as it is now Puerto Rico gets financial support but does not pay any taxes to the U.S. government (Some multi-national corporations have headquarters there just so they can skirt paying U.S. taxes.). Puerto Rico has always been supportive of America, by sending troops to fight in our wars, etc., and yet Puerto Rican citizens do not have access to the full benefits of being an American citizen. Puerto Rico is a legal territory of the U.S., which means that our U.S. congress can determine its destiny even though Puerto Ricans have no representatives in Congress. Statehood would obviously grant Puerto Rico with representatives. Personally, I think it makes sense for all involved to grant Puerto Rico statehood. Some Puerto Ricans worry that their culture would be lost, but personally I would guess that since they are located on an island, their culture would remain largely intact, as Hawaiian culture remains intact. Sure there would be some changes to it, as I'm sure there have been to Hawaiian culture, but it's not like it would be completely wiped out. And a change in culture does not have be always be a bad thing. Anyway, I've babbled long enough I suppose. I am by no means an expert on this issue, but this is just the way I see it. Feel free to point out further issues either for or against.....
